Are You At Risk Of Getting Diabetes?

things that can increase your risk for diabetes

No, eating sugar and sweets does not cause diabetes, or put you at high risk for diabetes (though it will definitely put you at a very high risk of acquiring many other health issues).

Diabetes can be of 3 types – type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes (which affects during pregnancy). Almost 1 out of 4 people with diabetes never realize they have, so it is even more important to know your risk factors.

Family history

If your parents, siblings, first cousins, immediate aunt, uncle, grandparents or anyblood relative have diabetes, it significantly increases your risk. Check with your doctor about any precautionary measures you may have to take.

Your age

These days, even adolescents and young adults are being diagnosed with diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. If you’re above 21, definitely get the required tests done after speaking with your doctor.

Excess weight or obesity

If your weight is more than what is normal as per BMI, or if you’re obese, your risk for diabetes is higher. Reducing your overall body weight by even five to eight percent can make a huge difference.

Check your waistline

Having more fat around the waistcan be a risk factor as it indicates excess body fat. Females with waist size more than 31 inches and men with waist size more than 37 inchesare at a higher risk.

Environmental and health factors

If you live in a very cold environment you are also at a higher risk of being diagnosed with diabetes as compared to those who live in tropical or hotter climates. Also, certain health conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of diabetes.

Timely medical attention can prevent your chances of getting diabetes and also help you stay healthy, so book an appointment with your doctor if you relate to any of the pointers above.
