Welcome to New York and Co. - Multi-starrer Movies that Flopped at the Box Office

With around a thousand movies produced each year, Bollywood is the world’s most prolific film industry. Certainly, there are megastars like the Khans who can and have, in the past, carried an entire movie on their shoulders and driven audience to the theatre just by the prowess of their name. So, when filmmakers huddle up a series of big names into the casting list, their hope is to make the movie work at the box office with the cumulative star power of the cast. But that rule of thumb, sadly, does not do the trick all the time.

Here are some of those movies that flopped at the box office despite having a multi-starrer cast:

The movie has just been released today (Feb 23rd, 2018) but oh! The horrible reviews are pouring in by the hour. The star cast boasts heavy names like Sonakshi Sinha, Diljit Dosanjh, Riteish Deshmukh, Karan Johar, Lara Dutta, Boman Irani, Rana Daggubati, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sushant Singh Rajput but the film has clearly failed to extract any positive reaction from the viewers.

Directed by Homi Adajania, this movie had an enviable cast of veteran actors like Naseerudin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia along with Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor on the lead. Even though the movie, in its content was admired by most critics, and the performance of the cast was appreciated as well, it failed to capture box office success majorly due to the subject and the setting. The quirk of the movie was very typical, perhaps enjoyable for a selected set of urban audience.

Housefull (2010)

Directed by Sajid Khan, this movie was perhaps the initiation to the landslide of not-so good movies that were (and are) to come next from him. Starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan and Boman Irani, the movie could easily be mistaken as a long slideshow about “how to not make movies”. The movie was a box office fail with the comedy so slapstick as to be unable to hold audience’s attention for more than two minutes.

This is not to say that a multiple cast movie always ends in disaster. In fact, many of the biggest and iconic hits throughout the history of Bollywood has been movies with a big star cast. They include the iconic Sholay, Dil Chahta Hai, 3 Idiots, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and many more. The problem arises when the filmmakers take their craft for granted or do not take audience response into account.
