It’s Independence Day, and we are sure you’re in the mood for a playlist consisting of some patriotic songs. If you’re tired of all the old ones that keep playing over and over every year, we’ve got you covered. We’ve chosen some great music released in the past couple of years for you to celebrate Independence Day with. Without wasting any more time then, let’s get going with this playlist.

Ae Watan – Raazi

From the massive hit that was Raazi, Ae Watan is a song that calls for the glory of our nation with its deeply emotional lyrics. Written by Gulzar and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, this track has been sung by none other than Sunidhi Chauhan. There’s even a female version sung by Arijit Singh that’s equally great.

Bharat – Manikarnika

“Main rahu ya na rahu, Bharat ye rehna chahiye” are the words that really hit home in the context of the film, Manikarnika. This softly sung track from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy shines more through its lyrics than its music. And Prasoon Joshi deserves plaudits for that.

Jaaga Hindustan – Gold

Gold was a great sports film, and it featured some really catchy songs. One among them was Jaaga Hindustan, a patriotic anthem, sung beautifully by Divya Kumar and Sachin-Jigar. An official video of the song is not available on YouTube, so what you see above is a fan-created one.

Challa (Main Lad Jaana) – Uri

The massive hit that Uri was, benefitted a lot from its excellent music. The highlight of its soundtrack was Challa, a highly energetic song that plays during a crucial portion of the film.

Tu Bhoola Jise – Airlift

Airlift’s ‘Tu Bhoola Jise’ easily evokes many emotions when you listen to it. This Amaal Mallik track features some brilliant lyrics by Kumaar, and plus, there’s K.K.’s voice which creates the rest of the magic.

Consisting of 7 members, Maroon 5 is a band that has achieved phenomenal success worldwide with their incredible music. They’ve been active since way back in the early 2000s, and have been treating us with excellent pop rock music ever since. Till date, Maroon 5 has sold more than 109 million singles and 27 million albums worldwide, which makes them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Today, we’ve decided to create a playlist of some of their greatest songs to help you relive the magic of their music.

Won’t Go Home Without You

This excellent ballad is given its character by Adam Levine’s peculiar voice. It’s a song that stays in your head for a long time after you listen to it even once. The lyrics of Won’t Go Home Without You are also worth your attention for their emotional content.

She Will Be Loved

She Will Be Love is a soulful and beautiful track with fantastic lyrics. Adam Levine’s vocal performance is at its brilliant best in this one. Moreover, it has an interesting music video as well.

Payphone

There was a time when you couldn’t go anywhere without listening to this song playing around you. Payphone, with its catchy melody, also features a performance by rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Moves Like Jagger

Moves Like Jagger had Maroon 5 collaborating with Christina Aguilera. It’s a dance-pop and electropop song with its lyrics referring to a male’s ability to impress a love interest with his dance moves. It was a massive hit when it was released back in 2011.

Harder To Breathe

This was the song that made the world sit up and take notice of Maroon 5. It’s got a funk rock flavour to it, which is pretty much absent from all the songs from the band’s later albums.

Makes Me Wonder

Makes Me Wonder came out in 2007, and created waves with its dance pop brilliance. It was the band’s first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while it even won Maroon 5 the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Wake Up Call

The frantic nature of Wake Up Call’s music and vocals is what makes it so catchy. And then there’s Levine’s voice, which adds a flavour of its own. Wake Up Call’s music video was one of the most played back in the early days of VH1.

This Love

This Love was released as the second single from Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane. It is built around an excellent piano-led strut, which is followed by synth percussion, and a repeating guitar sound.

Those are all the songs you need to relive the euphoria of Maroon 5’s music once again.

Not every beautiful song becomes the song-next-door. There always are those hidden gems, those beautiful beautiful gems, that go relatively unappreciated. But you know what? Sometimes, we like it that way! Sometimes a song makes you feel something so private and special that you get personally attached to it. And that’s when the desire to keep it hidden creeps in. You share that song only with a handful of people, because after all it is extremely special. Here’s a small list of such hidden gems. Well, it’s small because you cannot expect me to reveal it all. I mean, obviously. What did I just tell you? 😛

Chali Kahani From Tamasha

Here’s a song that surprisingly goes unnoticed in this brilliant movie- Tamasha. Tamasha has many great songs and they have received their share of appreciation, except this beauty! This song IS basically the movie. What I mean to say is, this song perfectly describes the theme of the movie Tamasha. How it shows that many small love stories are in fact one same story is worth noticing and thinking about. The song has splendid music of A R Rahman, exceptional lyrics by Irshad Kamil, and it is sung by the amazing Sukhwinder Singh along with Haricharan and Haripriya.

Chaap Tilak From Coke Studio Season 7, Episode 6

Sung by the greats- Abida Parveen & Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a song that touches your soul. Penned by the subcontinent’s foremost musical genius Hazrat Amir Khusrau, ‘Chaap Tilak’ is actually a very popular qawwali. The song is full of identifiable symbolisms if you listen carefully and in essence it is all about love and the beauty of losing oneself in it. While the qawwali has been given voice by many artists before, this one is extremely special coming from the two legends of the music industry. The song has excellent direction as both singers are allowed the space to weave their own magic during the performance.

Ek Bagal Mein From Gangs Of Wasseypur

Just the name of the artist behind this master piece is enough- Piyush Mishra. For each line of this song there is one literal meaning that most of us can understand, and then there is one symbolic or hidden meaning that is not very easy to interpret. The wizard like voice of Piyush Mishra gives further mystery and thrill to the overall element of the song. The song in a very subtle way, describes the essence of the entire movie Gangs of wasseypur while also giving reflection of a normal human life. The song is a complete story in itself and the narration/singing by Piyush Mishra is beyond brilliant. The song has received its outstanding composition from Snehal Bhatka while Piyush Mishra was obviously the writer and the singer. Piyush Mishra’s “Husna” in MTV Coke Studio, (2012) is also worth spending time with!

Monta Re From Lootera

This song, inspired by the folk music tradition of Bengal, is in the magical voice of Swanand Kirkire and Amitabh Bhattacharya. While Amit Trivedi has done a fabulous job in creating a delightful music composition, Amitabh Bhattacharya has done complete justice to the lyrics. The phrase “Kemon boka monta re” in the song literally means “what an idiot the heart is”. It’d be endearing to say that this one line describes the whole song perfectly but that would be unfair. The entire song is beautiful and even if you do not understand the meaning at once, it makes you feel something special. Search the meaning of the entire song and then listen to it again for a magical experience. Also in fact, I’d recommend EVERY song of the movie Lootera. It is one of the best albums ever!

The experience of writing this article was just as unique as it was strange. These songs mean something to me and I hope all of you can derive something out of it too. Happy Listening!

The welcoming of the spring season, the festival of colours is back again! The pichkaris, colours, gulal, sweets and white clothes are synonymous with the vibrancy and energy of Holi, but is that where the list ends? Of course not! How can a Holi party be complete without songs celebrating the season? While we’re at it, let’s move over Bollywood (the generic ‘balam pichkari’ and ‘rang barse’ are so 2018, aren’t they?) and bring back traditional Holi songs from all parts of the country. So, why not go back to those days and reinvent the simplicity of those colourful songs with our modern Holi-playing techniques?

2000 Vi Chaar Ke Phagun – Holi Of Our Childhood

What’s Holi without some classic Bhojpuri Holi songs? Part of the well-known album ‘Phaguaa Express’ by Manoj Tiwari, who has given us some of the funniest songs from the Bhojpuri music industry – “2000 Vi Chaar Ke Phagun” has been sung by Tiwari, Bela Sulakhe, Sumeet Babu and Rekha Rao. The music video centres on the dour of them playing Holi in the garden, just like we used to in our childhood.

Hey Radha Nakhrari Sawer Mal Saini – The Mythological Hint

Released under the music label of Chetak Cassettes and sung by A, “Hey Radha Nakhrari Sawer Mal Saini” is a Rajasthani folk song based on the festivities of Holi. Of course, the song seems to take the love story of Shri Krishna and Radha as well, as they are constantly referred to in the song. Though slightly old-fashioned for our tastes, it will certainly bring back many memories of our parents.

Aaj Holi Khelenge Ke Dekhai Khadi Chaubare Mein – Perfect For Lathmaar

A Haryanvi folk song based on Holi, the song is set in a small town where a young man invites a young woman to play Holi with him. Of course, the woman retorts and this soon becomes a game of its own. The song is sung by a number of singers such as Fouji Karambir and Aarti Duggal. The motif of water balloons plays an important part in the song, as they symbolise fun and the festival of colours quite appropriately.

Kanak Sunehri – Good One For The Holi Party

When talking about popular Holi songs, a Punjabi option just has to be present to spice things up. “Kanak Sunheri” is actually performed by the Punjabi singer Kadir Thind, who is well-known for his other songs “Lost – Sohna Sohna” and “End Jatti”. The music video is set at a Holi party, where Kadir falls in love with the girl of his dreams. Though the ‘Holi’ element loses its magic by the end of the song, it’s still a good choice for your party.

Holiya Mein Ude Re Gulal – The Must-Have Holi Song

A song about the energy that is prominent during Holi, Ila Arun’s Holi song, “Holiyan Mein Ude Re Gulal” is a popular song that one must listen to. Though a very old song, it will add some nostalgia to your uber-cool Holi party.

Moving over the usual Bollywood mashups, these non-filmi Holi songs will bring back the real culture of the festival without the words ‘daaru’ and ‘bhaang’ thrown in every other line. Save these up for your upcoming Holi party, and enjoy the compliments for your choice of a Holi playlist!

One such impeccably talented new singer of B town is Tony Kakkar. Music runs deep in his veins for his sister Neha Kakkar is also one of the most prominent singers of this generation. Tony Kakkar is fondly loved and remembered by one and all, mainly for his passion in romantic numbers. The amount of fame and glory this young and talented singer has achieved in such a less time is indeed commendable. He is a versatile person as apart from being a singer, he has penned the lyrics of some of the greatest tracks and has excelled at being a composer as well. Tony Kakkar has sung many Punjabi tracks too, and some of his most amazing numbers are:

The filmy world has been that place that oozes out talent of myriad forms. We have had actors who are extremely versatile to juggle various genres. We have seen many talented actors trying their hands at directing and producing movies, and they gave us some movies which are worth remembering. Bollywood has never failed to surprise us each day with good news of different kinds.

What touches us the most about our favorite Bollywood celebrities is when we hear them crooning to the tunes of the songs from their movies. Sure, we love to see them act and entertain us, but hearing them sing gives us a pleasure of a different kind. The Holi anthem of India, Rang Barse, became as popular as it is now because our very own Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice to this beautiful song. And, it is not just senior Bachchan who is great at singing. He seems to have passed his talent on to Junior Bachchan as well as we still remember how the Bluffmaster of Bollywood, Abhishek Bachchan rocked the screens by singing the title track of the movie. Little did we know that he would ace at rapping. And of course how can we ever forget SRK singing “Apun Bola” in Josh?

These were the old songs we grew up with. Meanwhile, Bollywood has given us something to look forward to with these amazing songs sung by the celebrities themselves in the recent years:

The Youngest Nightingale Of Bollywood – Alia Bhatt, Samjhawan

While Alia’s acting career was soaring, we came to know about another of her hidden talents. Alia Bhatt sings like a professional singer, and that was proved to us when we heard her lend her voice to our very favourite song, Samjhawan from the movie, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. The soulful song of love is etched deep in our minds ever since its release.

Music Runs In The Blood – Parineeti Chopra, Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahi

This song reminds us of all the tales of love that we lost. But it also reminds us that it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. This melodious number from the movie, Meri Pyaari Bindu is our favourite for another reason too. Our very own Parineeti Chopra was the one who crooned to the tunes of this song and made this one very difficult to forget. Not only has this bubbly beauty won us over with her acting skills, but her singing skills are a cherry on top.

The Tough Khan Of Bollywood – Aamir Khan, Dhaakad

We all know our Aamir Khan as a perfectionist who aces every role he lays his hands upon. His talent for singing also deserves special mention. The first song he sang for Bollywood was the famous Khandala song, which is still our favourite one while playing antakshari. In 2017, he played the “hanikarak bapu” in the movie Dangal, and at the end of the movie he surprised us even more when he sang the Dhaakad song and rocked one and all.

The Three In One Package – Shraddha Kapoor, Teri Galiyaan

Shraddha Kapoor is that great talent of B town who is a good actor, an amazing dancer, and a mellifluous singer. Her acting and dancing skills do not need a special mention as we have all seen it one too many times. Shraddha Kapoor is being loyal to her bloodline as it can be traced till Lata Mangeshkar. Her beautiful voice in the song Teri Galiyaan from the Ek Villain has a special place in our hearts.

The Soft And Mellowed Down Tiger – Salman Khan, Main Hoon Hero Tera

He made his singing debut in the movie Hello Brother with the song, Chaandi Ki Daal Par. It was a funky Holi song which he lent his voice to, and years later he came up with another profound and heartfelt number, Main Hoon Hero Tera from the movie, Hero. The song became an instant hit and can be easily called one of the romantic anthems which will never get old.

With so many young and old talents working together, no wonder B Town is a place full of pleasant surprises.

John Mayer is back with a new track called I Guess I Just Feel Like, which is a studio version of a song he had debuted at the iHeartRadio Theater in California last year. Mayer had said that he had finished writing the song right before getting onto the stage for his performance. He had recently announced a US tour, which will get underway in July, and run all the way into September.

I Guess I Just Feel Like a mostly acoustic song, except for electric guitar riffs that he play in two portions. It’s a ballad with emotional lyrics talking about the insecurities of the past that haunt the present. John Mayer’s trademark singing style is on full display here, and he doesn’t try hard with his vocals or his music to impress. It’s an overall controlled track that takes the cake with its simplicity.

Through an Instagram post, Mayer shared the story of how the song came to him. It reads, “I spent August and September of last year looking for new songs and couldn’t find them. I was thinking with my ultra-aesthetic brain, trying to write the tune I thought would be cool to have via sequencers, plugins and effects. (That process has worked barely enough times to still make it justifiable.) Then one day in October I decided I’d had just about enough of myself, and that’s always when the good stuff starts. I got two inexpensive microphones, a 1” tape machine and took out my Martin D-45 guitar. ‘I’m just going to do what I do,’ I remember thinking. And then it all clicked again. I wrote most of I Guess I Just Feel Like in an hour.”

John Mayer’s last release came in the form of New Light, which was released in May last year. And it’s been quite some time since a full studio album hit the shelves. The Search for Everything was his last compilation that came out in April 2017. The album was quite a big hit, and featured tracks like Love on the Weekend and In the Blood.

You can listen to the audio of I Guess I Just Feel Like in the space above.

Bollywood has been renowned for the impeccable music it has given us since time immemorial. All of us have grown up dealing with life with the music that Bollywood has presented to us in its myriad forms. The 90s kids will remember how perfectly AR Rahman’s soulful music blended with our lives and made it a beautiful place. Then with the passage of time came music composers like Pritam, who holds a firm place in our hearts, Vishaal and Shekhar, who rocked us with their music, and the terrific trio, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, who killed it with their mind-blowing melodies.

Though 90s was the golden age of Bollywood during the course of which we got innumerable amazing movies and songs, the present age, with its caustic and realistic movies and off beats songs, is no less. With each passing day, many new budding composers are making their presence felt.

Some of the amazing melody makers of the current generation are:

Anupam Roy – The King Of Versatility

Anupam Roy made his mark in Tollywood when he took the Bengali music industry by storm with his impeccable songs from the movie Autograph. His amazingly woven lyrics and the great music from the movie left an impression on us which won’t be easily removed.

In 2015, he won our hearts again by composing music for the movie Piku. Only an Anupam Roy could have pulled off a sensitive song like Bezubaan. He has also composed the music for movies like Pari and Pink.

Amaal Mallik – The One Who Brought EDM To The Forefront

Amaal Mallik has been one such contemporary composer of Bollywood who deserves a lot of credit for the amazing music that he has given us, which will last us a lifetime.

Music runs deep in his veins and his first EDM song which took us all by a pleasant surprise was Sooraj Dooba Hai from the film Roy. He also specialises in pop, jazz and filmy music and has given us beautiful romantic tracks like Soch Na Sake from Airlift.

Amit Trivedi – The One Who Is Always On Demand

He is someone who had it in him to impress the legendary Anurag Kashyap with his amazing music for the movie Dev D. His official break in Bollywood came with the movie Aamir, but it was Dev D, which got Amit Trivedi his first national award. Since then there has been no looking back.

He has been the music composer of movies like Wake Up Sid and Udaan, and he has that unconventional talent in him which Bollywood is in dire need of right now. His songs like London Thumakda from Queen and all the melodious tracks from the movie Lootera will be entrenched in history forever.

Sachin – Jigar: Because It Takes Two To Tango

This terrific duo is famous for songs like Chaar Baj Gaye from the movie F.A.L.T.U and they also composed music for the movie Shor In The City and Hum Tum Shabana. The beautiful song Saibo, from the movie Shor In The City became pretty famous. They have also won accolades for composing music for movies like OMG: Oh My God, Ajab Gazabb Love, I, Me, Aur Main.

They have endless talent which has been revealed by the amazing music they composed for Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania. The recent favourite song composed by the duo is Kamariya from the movie Stree. They have composed music for recent movies like Gold, ABCD 2, Bhoomi, Badlapur etc.

Ajay – Atul: Another Hit Musical Duo

Brothers Atul and Ajay Godavale have been making some really great music for Bollywood in the recent years, and their music has attained a lot of attention and praise recently.

We can never forget the heart-touching song “Abhi mujh mein kahin” from Agneepath (2012). Their recent compositions include songs for Zero, Dhadak, Thugs Of Hindostan etc.

Mithoon – The Amazing Singer And Composer

Mithoon as a composer rose to prominence with his beautiful romantic composition Tum Hi Ho from the movie Aashiqui 2. He is also the composer of the viral song, Sanam Re, which took YouTube by storm in no time.

His first original composition, Bas Ek Pal, still rings with us and since then we knew that he was going to be a great music composer of this generation. And who can get enough of his Phir bhi tumko chahunga from the movie Half Girlfriend?

With these melody makers, Bollywood can never be devoid of great music.

He didn’t have a godfather when he started out in the music industry. But once success touched Rahman’s life, the music maestro didn’t stop himself from giving back to the industry.

A R Rahman has been the route and reason for many talents, who’ve made a name for themselves in showbiz. Let’s take a look at the recent sensations who were introduced by the man himself:

1. Shashaa Tirupati

Spotted by Rahman, she is currently known as the ‘Humma Humma’ girl, however, she rose to fame in 2013 after Kochadaiyyan and especially after the OK Kanmani song ‘Kaara Aattaakkaara’. Shashaa moved to India after abandoning her pre-medical course in Canada to pursue music full-time. However, she struggled to get recognition for quite a lot of years. The big break by Rahman completely changed her career.

2. Naresh Iyer

He is one of those lucky singers, who got a call from A R Rahman’s office with an invite to make singing debut in Tamil film industry. Naresh Iyer rose to national fame with the Rang De Basanti song ‘Roobaroo’.

She flew from Bangalore to Chennai to pursue a career in singing. After her small acting stint in Shah Rukh and Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram, she got a call from Rahman to sing ‘Shakalaka Baby’ for the movie Mudhalvan and its Telugu version Okke Okkudu. Remember, the song where Sushmita Sen had made a guest appearance?

4. Mili Nair

They got their first break in Bollywood in the year 2014 with Imtiaz Ali’s Highway; thanks to the music maestro A.R Rahman. Patakha Guddi’s popularity made them bag big films like Sultan, Dangal and Jab Harry Met Sejal.

Rahman is not just known for giving newbies the dream debuts of their life, but on the personal front is as calm as water. “He never gets angry, never shouts, he is very calm and relaxed,” said music composer Deep Pradhan, alumni of Berkeley School Of Music, who worked under Rahman.

Rahman had once said in a press conference, that his father, R.K. Shekhar, was someone who still is a big source of inspiration for him, who promoted many musicians.

We guess the legacy still stands with Rahman.

Bollywood has been known for producing mash-ups since the beginning of time… romantic mashups, party mashups, festival mashups and the list goes on. However, T-Series gave us some hope of bringing back our favourite songs in a brand-new format. The T-Series Mixtape series is a collection of fusion mashups of well-chosen Bollywood songs that have touched our hearts and souls over the past couple of years.

Here we bring to you five of the hugely popular gems of the series –

High Rated Gabru/Ban Ja Rani – Guru Randhawa And Neha Kakkar

A romantic mashup with two of the well-loved songs of 2018, Guru Randhawa and Neha Kakkar have brought out a Punjabi fusion mashup of “Ban Ja Rani” and “High Rated Gabru”. The original songs have been taken from the movies “Nawabzaade” and “Tumhari Sulu”. The fusion is a perfect blend of a variety of guitars, violin electronic drums and other percussion instruments contrasted with the Punjabi dholak. Honestly, nobody had ever expected these songs to be sung to a Punjabi beat.

Ambarsariya/Suit – Guru Randhawa And Kanika Kapoor

A second Punjabi romantic collection packed in proper style by the singers, the singers take turns in performing the song. The modern background score with guitar, drums and piano work well with the dhol and the chorus. The songs have been originally taken from the movie “Fukrey” and “Hindi Medium”. If you’re a fan of Punjabi music, this is definitely a track that you should listen to.

Agar Tum Saath Ho/Maahi Ve – Jubin Nautiyal And Prakriti Kakkar

A soft romantic track is sung to perfection by the singers, as they take turns in singing the song. Nautiyal seems to have taken our hearts away with his rendition of the song, while Kakkar brings a soothing sensation to the entire composition. You will love the blend of hybrid drums, piano, guitar, duff and grand piano and the chorus. And you’ll notice the pathos in their voices as they sing the last portion of “Agar Tum Saath Ho” from the movie ‘Tamasha’.

Tu Jo Mila/Raabta – Jubin Nautiyal And Shirley Setia

Setia gave us a sweet female version of the feel-good song “Tu Jo Mila” from the movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, while Nautiyal aced the romantic song “Raabta” from the movie ‘Agent Vinod’. The unexpected pair works beautifully as they take on one song after the other. Of course, when they bring such emotion to the already-beautiful lyrics, the mashup is bound to be a huge success.

Tose Naina/Tum Jo Aaye – Armaan Malik And Tulsi Kumar

Armaan Malik has stolen our hearts with his amazing rendition of “Tose Naina”, while Tulsi Kumar gave a heartwarming performance as well. One could find themselves falling in love with the lyrics, voices and the musical background score. Where there are such beautiful songs to be performed, the quality simply has to touch the skies!

Though the original songs will always have a place in our heart, the mashups presented by the T-Series Mixtape series have been just as amazing. It’s totally worth listening to, so choose the song befitting your state of mind and lose yourself in their music.
