This Ghoomar performance at an NBA game will surely make your day

Amidst the hoopla that is still surrounding Padmaavat even after more than a week of its much-awaited release, the film seems to continue capturing the hearts of people. The latest in its conquest is an American dance group which performed to the popular song Ghoomar during the halftime of a basketball game.

The NBA match in question was being played between Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat, and those present in the stands were quite surprised to see the dancers arriving onto the playing field in Indian attire. When the song started, the excitement peaked for those who realized that this was actually going to be a performance on Ghoomar.

As you can see in the video posted right below, the dancers haven’t held back on their steps even a bit. They have embraced the latkas and jhatkas with so much finesse that it’s hard to believe that this is not their regular dance style. The video has been posted on the NBA’s official Facebook page with the caption, “Revisit the mesmerising moment when the sights and sounds of Ghoomar from Padmaavat took over the NBA!”

The song, known more for the controversy surrounding it than for its music, has indeed been topping charts ever since its release. The main criticism it received was from the Karni Sena who claimed that Rajput queens never danced before anybody.

Their claims never manifested into the removal of the song from the film, but the CBFC did order the makers to apply some VFX in order to cover Deepika Padukone’s bare belly. As ridiculous as it sounds, it’s nothing compared to the organized campaign that the Karni Sena put forth to avoid the release of the film.

But Padmaavat managed to defy all odds, and was released on January 25. And even after its release, the film could not stop itself from grabbing the headlines. Accusations of the evil portrayal of Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji and actor Swara Bhaskar’s recent open letter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali alleging that the movie made her feel like a vagina due to its regressive portrayal of women, are just a few of the controversies surrounding the film right now.

But it’s always good to see some positive news around. Which is why the Ghoomar performance at the NBA game will surely get you elated. Do watch it.
