You Want To Commit Jauhar For A Movie? Go Ahead, That’s All You Deserve

Why the whole Jauhar threat over Padmavati release made me laugh (and wonder)

You want to commit Jauhar for a movie? Go ahead, that’s all you deserve

The movie Padmavat has released, and yes, people went and watched it and came back home and talked about it and forgot.

That’s what a movie generally is all about.

And that’s what a democratic country is generally all about.

You watch a two or three hour long movie, you live through all the emotions during those hours, get entertained, learn something about that particular time, era, culture and the people who lived through it, and come back to your real life.

And life goes on.

So what was all this ‘over-dramatic’ melodrama by these women who threatened to commit Jauhar if the movie got released?

Women – you want to commit Jauhar for a movie, because it shows a supposedly fictional queen (no one really knows whether her existence is historical or fictional, mind you, as she first made an appearance in 1540 in the poem titled ‘Padmavat’ by the medieval poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi) dancing without a ghunghat and shows her having feelings for man? Really? Do you even know what Jauhar is? And what it signified and why women did it?

Jauhar was the Hindu custom where women would immolate themselves in huge numbers to avoid being taken captive by invaders.

How does the movie Padmavat do that? How does Deepika Padukone’s portrayal of the queen Padmavati threaten your dignity? How do you know what is shown in the movie, when all you probably had seen till you threatened Jauhar and tried to seek all this attention was a movie poster, a trailer and a few songs?

That is enough for your enlightened brain to understand what the film is about? You really feel you’re qualified enough to tell me and millions of other grown up citizens what we should and should not watch?

How many times have you actually done something really useful and protested against a just cause? Are you saying we live in a perfect world where the only ‘bad’ thing to happen is the release of the Padmavat movie? Do you know how many rapes happen each day, each second, in our country? Infants, toddlers, small girls, women, men – raped and killed. How many children are kidnapped? How many end up in the flesh trade and as beggars? How many go without food and education? How many suffer with no access to basic hygiene?

And out of all this, what all cause have you raised your voice for? What all cause have you threatened Jauhar for?

So all the dear women and hopefully even men of the Karni Sena, let’s see how true your karni actually is. If you haven’t yet had a chance to raise your voice and threaten, then this is the time for you to actually do Jauhar. You of all people deserve to do this, you’ve been chosen for this, as you really have no other purpose in life.

So do everyone a favour – perform Jauhar and help us clean up our country a bit. And if you’re coward enough to light your own pyre, ask for help. I promise many of us will lovingly light your way to your heaven.
