How many times have you returned home with a massive headache because of those glaring headlights at night or the unnecessary honking of cars from behind? The ride on Indian roads sometimes seem like a journey from one end of the world to another even though we intend to cover a half an hour ride! The kind of drivers we face all around are not only amusing to watch but all the more entertaining to interact with! Indian roads seem like a constant situation of turmoil no matter which hour of the day it is!

Recently, the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee has introduced a very “creative” move of converting the “Safe Drive, Save Life” slogan into stickers and has made it mandatory to stick these on vehicles all across the state! The move is authentic we must agree, but perhaps a little too unnecessary as well! Maybe as normalized as the “urke jayga kya” remark is from one driver to another who’s unnecessarily honking at a traffic signal!

As Mamata Banerjee talked about roping in young boys and girls for the “Safe Drive, Save Life” campaign, shouldn’t we be wondering what the purpose of these stickers really are? With such moves by governments, what will change? If at all! Stickers such as “Horn Ok Please” or “Use Dipper At Night” never go missing from behind the trucks, busses or auto-rickshaws for ages now. The point of wonder is how many drivers actually pay heed to these?

We’ve surely seen witty slogans behind public as well as private vehicles. Most of these also have inner meaning and they send across road safety messages too. However, we mostly just read these, have a hearty laugh and then forget them!

Will waiting at the traffic signals to paste these big stickers allow the drivers to see better and avoid accidents? Maybe not!
