Whenever I think of how important lips are to a person’s beauty, I think of this line from one of my favourite poets, Percy Bysshe Shelley – ‘Soul meets soul on lovers’ lips.’
Amongst the features that enhance beauty, healthy-looking and pouty lips are perhaps the best. Many poets and songwriters have written paeans on the beauty of lips. Everyone wants to possess lips with the perfect cupid’s bow.
Even if genes and nature have dealt you a not-so-good hand, cosmetic intervention to have the perfect lips is possible. In fact, cosmetic lip enhancement using fillers is one of the most popular corrective treatments in the field of dermatology or plastic surgery.

Lip enhancement is done using injectable lip fillers to create a desired shape or lushness in the lips. These lip fillers are either made of Collagen or Hyaluronic Acid based compounds. Collagen plumps the lips by providing an additional cushion within the dermal layer while Hyaluronic acid plumps the lips by trapping water within the lips, thereby giving it a natural and plump pout. But one needs to make sure that the dermal fillers are FDA approved. Most reputed dermatologists will ideally use certified dermal fillers.
The pain differs from procedure to procedure and also depends on the ‘hand’ – basically expertise – of the dermatologist. Usually a numbing gel is used and a numbing injectable if the treatment is more detailed. Then the needle of the filler doesn’t feel at all. After the treatment, the lips can feel tender for 2-3 days and slightly swollen. Ice can be used on the lips and arnica tablets can be prescribed to minimize bruises and swelling.
Lip enhancement must always be done by a qualified expert. It is a simple procedure that doesn’t require many sittings but if you want a natural feel (and also long-lasting effect) to your lip enhancement, subsequent sittings are required. The prescribed first dose is 1 ml, which does give you a natural look for a minor change and helps to build upon subsequent sessions when required. On an average a top can be required every 6 months to a year depending on the above factors. The ‘age’ of a lip filler depends on the type of filler used, age of the patient and the treatment done. In this case, the dermatologist you are consulting will advise you the best.
Generally the results are visible within 24 hours of the treatment. Again this depends on how much volume of the filler one has gone for.

Lip enhancement should be done in stages to avoid any mishap – and also a more natural look. Regular reviews, consultation and a top up are advised to figure out how you are responding to fillers.
Also, it is important to see what type of fillers you are opting for. Collagen fillers have a chance of 1-3% allergic reaction. But these days, dermatologists prefer HA fillers, which last longer than collagen fillers. Also the success of the procedure depends upon the efficiency of the dermatologist.
Anyone who is on blood thinning medication or taking Vitamin pills should not go for this treatment. Even regular green tea drinkers and wine lovers are advised to stop consumption one week prior to the treatment.
