Are My Tattoos The Only Thing You Notice About Me?

Are you ready to look beyond those tattooed arms?

Let’s start by saying I have eight tattoos – eight beautiful pieces of art that are there on my body, after carefully thinking and understanding what I want them to portray, and then spending time with the artist to give it the final look.

I have never been bothered about getting a tattoo. In fact, the first tattoo I got was a sudden attempt at getting a piece of art on my body. I didn’t give it much thought and just went ahead with it. That started a journey and a love that has only grown stronger over the years.

I get a lot of unabashed stares at my tattoos. I understand curiosity and I understand appreciative glances too. I know that having tattoo sleeves, where most of your arms are covered in art, is not something most people in our country are used to yet.

To some, I am kind of a freak, an abomination, a weird woman who chose to get too much ink on herself.

I chose it because I love it. To me, each of my tattoos symbolizes something very close to my heart. And I know not everyone has to agree with my choices.

But what makes me sad is when people get judgemental because I wear tattoos. Many take it as an opportunity to hit on me, to start getting personal, or ask me questions that are straight up vulgar.

Many people even look at me as if I am a bad influence, as if sporting tattoos means I’m definitely beyond any good behaviour – iska kuchh nahi ho sakta types.

But you know what? Most people who are passionate about tattoos are wonderfully compassionate people. Of all the amazing tattoo artists that I know and all the many tattoo lovers I have met till date, I noticed one thing in common – we’re a bunch of warm, loving, compassionate, helpful and non-judgemental people.

It’s sad that most people still look at tattoo that is something forbidden, that makes us stand out in a bad way.

Doesn’t have to be like that, does it? It’s true that our tattoos can sometimes stare you in the face, but what if you chose to look beyond and start up a conversation instead? You’d be amazed at how many judgmental barriers of your mind it would break. Trust me 😉
