The Indian Art Of Having The Aur Bataao Conversation

Aur bataao, the perfect way to make someone hang up

Ever wondered what our smartphones could do if they were given a chance to take a call (no, not literally the way they do, but in this case, to take a judgement) and decide whether or not the call should continue or discontinue?

For instance, what if I feed my smartphone a few phrases and timeline ideas (as in maybe a 30 second lapse in conversation), and it automatically remembers to track them when I am on a call?

What if, the next time you call me up and say “So, Debo, aurbataao” the call automatically gets disconnected? Because my smartphone will know from this phrase that it’s time to end it, coz both of us have nothing to speak?

Smart na?

I come from North India, and I can give you in writing that this aurbataaowas invented there by someone, not because he or she didn’t have anything more to talk about, but because this was their way of bugging off people so that they would buzz away.

The moment you say aurbataao, it’s as a red blaring light goes off on top of your head, proclaiming to the world that we clearly have nothing more to talk about

I have suffered this atrocious suffering many many times. At weddings, at social gatherings, at events, at home, over the phone, with those I have loved (and thankfully been smart enough to let go of), with those I have loved and have decided to hang around with still, at work (!), at official events and whatnot.

And while I’m at it, let’s also take a moment to remember our typical Indian padosisand uncles and aunties, with their ‘aurbataao beta’ act – I mean, aurkyabataaoon? Love and lust life secrets? The doings of the secret satanic cult I am part of? The delicious details of the last murder I committed?

Matlab, aur kya bataaoon?
