It’s Independence Day, and we are sure you’re in the mood for a playlist consisting of some patriotic songs. If you’re tired of all the old ones that keep playing over and over every year, we’ve got you covered. We’ve chosen some great music released in the past couple of years for you to celebrate Independence Day with. Without wasting any more time then, let’s get going with this playlist.

Ae Watan – Raazi

From the massive hit that was Raazi, Ae Watan is a song that calls for the glory of our nation with its deeply emotional lyrics. Written by Gulzar and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, this track has been sung by none other than Sunidhi Chauhan. There’s even a female version sung by Arijit Singh that’s equally great.

Bharat – Manikarnika

“Main rahu ya na rahu, Bharat ye rehna chahiye” are the words that really hit home in the context of the film, Manikarnika. This softly sung track from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy shines more through its lyrics than its music. And Prasoon Joshi deserves plaudits for that.

Jaaga Hindustan – Gold

Gold was a great sports film, and it featured some really catchy songs. One among them was Jaaga Hindustan, a patriotic anthem, sung beautifully by Divya Kumar and Sachin-Jigar. An official video of the song is not available on YouTube, so what you see above is a fan-created one.

Challa (Main Lad Jaana) – Uri

The massive hit that Uri was, benefitted a lot from its excellent music. The highlight of its soundtrack was Challa, a highly energetic song that plays during a crucial portion of the film.

Tu Bhoola Jise – Airlift

Airlift’s ‘Tu Bhoola Jise’ easily evokes many emotions when you listen to it. This Amaal Mallik track features some brilliant lyrics by Kumaar, and plus, there’s K.K.’s voice which creates the rest of the magic.

Consisting of 7 members, Maroon 5 is a band that has achieved phenomenal success worldwide with their incredible music. They’ve been active since way back in the early 2000s, and have been treating us with excellent pop rock music ever since. Till date, Maroon 5 has sold more than 109 million singles and 27 million albums worldwide, which makes them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Today, we’ve decided to create a playlist of some of their greatest songs to help you relive the magic of their music.

Won’t Go Home Without You

This excellent ballad is given its character by Adam Levine’s peculiar voice. It’s a song that stays in your head for a long time after you listen to it even once. The lyrics of Won’t Go Home Without You are also worth your attention for their emotional content.

She Will Be Loved

She Will Be Love is a soulful and beautiful track with fantastic lyrics. Adam Levine’s vocal performance is at its brilliant best in this one. Moreover, it has an interesting music video as well.

Payphone

There was a time when you couldn’t go anywhere without listening to this song playing around you. Payphone, with its catchy melody, also features a performance by rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Moves Like Jagger

Moves Like Jagger had Maroon 5 collaborating with Christina Aguilera. It’s a dance-pop and electropop song with its lyrics referring to a male’s ability to impress a love interest with his dance moves. It was a massive hit when it was released back in 2011.

Harder To Breathe

This was the song that made the world sit up and take notice of Maroon 5. It’s got a funk rock flavour to it, which is pretty much absent from all the songs from the band’s later albums.

Makes Me Wonder

Makes Me Wonder came out in 2007, and created waves with its dance pop brilliance. It was the band’s first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while it even won Maroon 5 the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Wake Up Call

The frantic nature of Wake Up Call’s music and vocals is what makes it so catchy. And then there’s Levine’s voice, which adds a flavour of its own. Wake Up Call’s music video was one of the most played back in the early days of VH1.

This Love

This Love was released as the second single from Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane. It is built around an excellent piano-led strut, which is followed by synth percussion, and a repeating guitar sound.

Those are all the songs you need to relive the euphoria of Maroon 5’s music once again.

John Mayer is back with a new track called I Guess I Just Feel Like, which is a studio version of a song he had debuted at the iHeartRadio Theater in California last year. Mayer had said that he had finished writing the song right before getting onto the stage for his performance. He had recently announced a US tour, which will get underway in July, and run all the way into September.

I Guess I Just Feel Like a mostly acoustic song, except for electric guitar riffs that he play in two portions. It’s a ballad with emotional lyrics talking about the insecurities of the past that haunt the present. John Mayer’s trademark singing style is on full display here, and he doesn’t try hard with his vocals or his music to impress. It’s an overall controlled track that takes the cake with its simplicity.

Through an Instagram post, Mayer shared the story of how the song came to him. It reads, “I spent August and September of last year looking for new songs and couldn’t find them. I was thinking with my ultra-aesthetic brain, trying to write the tune I thought would be cool to have via sequencers, plugins and effects. (That process has worked barely enough times to still make it justifiable.) Then one day in October I decided I’d had just about enough of myself, and that’s always when the good stuff starts. I got two inexpensive microphones, a 1” tape machine and took out my Martin D-45 guitar. ‘I’m just going to do what I do,’ I remember thinking. And then it all clicked again. I wrote most of I Guess I Just Feel Like in an hour.”

John Mayer’s last release came in the form of New Light, which was released in May last year. And it’s been quite some time since a full studio album hit the shelves. The Search for Everything was his last compilation that came out in April 2017. The album was quite a big hit, and featured tracks like Love on the Weekend and In the Blood.

You can listen to the audio of I Guess I Just Feel Like in the space above.

India has a number of different film industries, and most artists make it a point to explore most of them in their careers. Same goes for our playback singers who often sing in a different language than what they are accustomed to. A number of Bollywood playback singers have over the years rendered songs for South Indian films, and have managed to sing their way into people’s hearts. Today, let’s take a look at the some such singers who are now very famous in South India.

Shreya Ghoshal

She is just unstoppable. She has been winning hearts right from her teenage years when she made her Bollywood debut with Devdas, and now she is well known for her work in Southern films as well. Shreya has sung songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and even Kannada, and has won as many as nine Filmfare South Awards. Her most famous songs there include Mirutha Mirutha, Thalachithalachi and Kaathirunnu Kaathirunnu.

Arijit Singh

It’s a little known fact that Arijit Singh actually made his playback singing debut through a Telugu film named Kedi. His performance in the song Neeve Na Neeve Na is commendable for someone who was so new. Recently, the much revered singer also made his debut in the Tamil industry with the film Pugazh.

Sunidhi Chauhan

Sunidhi Chauhan has been active as playback singer since way back in 1996 when she was just thirteen years of age. And she has made her versatility known not just through the various styles she can sing in, but also by singing in different languages. Chauhan has lent her voice to so many songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films that it’s hard to keep count.

You can listen to Sunidhi’s Telugu songs jukebox here:

Shalmali Kholgade

The Pareshaan girl who impressed many with her Ishaqzaade debut ventured into the South in 2013 with the Tamil film Naan Rajavaga Pogiren in which she sang the upbeat number Raja Raja. Since then, she has given her voice to a few Telugu songs as well, with Jil Jil Jil from the film Jil being the latest among them.

Sonu Nigam

And who could forget this guy. Perhaps the most versatile playback singer in the country, Sonu Nigam is already a legend. Sonu’s entry into the Southern realm came with the Kannada film Jeevanadhi in 1996, where he sang the beautiful Yello Yaro Hego. In 1998 he also sang in Telugu for Jeans, and since then he has sung more than a hundred songs for South Indian films.

Palak Muchhal

Known as much for her philanthropy as for her singing, Palak has made a name for her in both Bollywood and the Southern film industry. Apart from Kannada songs, she has also sung a few Tamil songs recently. Her most known song in the South is Unnaal Unnaal Un Ninaivaal for the Tamil version of M. S. Dhoni.

We wonder who the next playback singer from Bollywood will be to showcase their magic in the South.

Actors often turn to singing in order to overcome the monotony that comes with their profession, and of course, for many other reasons as well. But singing is not everyone’s cup of tea. In the age of auto tune, you can easily pass off your voice as pleasing, but some amount of talent is indeed needed if you wish to make a lasting impression. There have been quite a few failed attempts when actors have ruined the songs they were singing with their substandard efforts. Here are a few of them.

Sonakshi Sinha

The ridiculous amount of autotune that has gone into this song is enough evidence to prove how bad the original voice was. Sonakshi sings only a small portion of the song Let’s Celebrate, but manages to showcase her inability in no time. It’s evidently something she should have skipped doing.

Kim Kardashian

Kim turning a singer absolutely should not have happened. Jam (Turn it Up) can be easily counted among the worst songs of recent times. Her voice is harsh and hard to tolerate for more than a few seconds. It’s the kind of song you would torment your friends with.

Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt has given us some excellent songs in the form Sooha Sooha and Main Main Tenu Samjhawan Ki, but she made perhaps the biggest mistake of her career by deciding to sing at this year’s IIFA awards. She was actually sounding like Dhinchak Pooja in this performance, and if you don’t believe us, watch the video above.

Salman Khan

There’s a perfectly good version of the song Jumme Ki Raat in Mika’s voice. But we don’t know what persuaded the producers to give Salman Khan a go at it. He absolutely ruins the song and everything in it with his bad singing. And to add to it, there’s autotune as well which somehow makes the song even worse.

Watch video – Here

Lindsay Lohan

We’ve been seeing her as an actor right from her childhood, but in 2004 she came out with her first album which received mainly negative reviews. That was because the music was extremely generic and her singing very amateur. A second album was outed by her the following year, but she has kept her distance from singing ever since, thankfully.

Watch video – Here

Akshay Kumar

This is a beautiful song, no doubt, but we’re referring to the version sung by M M Kreem which is featured in the film Special 26. However, another version sung by Akshay Kumar was used for the film’s promotion which is perhaps one of the worst singing performances in Bollywood. There’s a massive amount of autotune present in this song, but it is of no use in making the song listen-worthy.

We are so lucky these people are not very ambitious about their singing careers.

Master Saleem’s skills can be judged by the fact that the singer’s first ever album was released when he was just 10 years old. A mainstay in Bollywood right now, this Punjabi singer had started singing at the ripe age of 6, having learnt from his father who has also tutored the likes of Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi, Sabar Koti and Diljaan. Master Saleem is known for complementing his mainstream singing with lots of sufi and devotional music as well. Here, we take a look at the finest Bollywood songs that he has given us.

Mast Kalandar – Heyy Babyy

This one’s a very high octane number which very few artists could have done justice to. Composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the track has Master Saleem dishing out a spectacular vocal performance, and for those unaware, this was actually his debut in Bollywood.

Tashan Mein – Tashan

His unique voice was a perfect fit for this track from the movie Tashan. It has been composed by Vishal and Shekhar, and has heaps and heaps of energy packed into it.

Maa Da Ladla – Dostana

The film Dostana’s music had become a huge hit back in the day, with Maa Da Ladla being one of its highlight-worthy songs. Master Saleem has added a lot of quirkiness to this song with this exceptional voice.

Aahun Aahun – Love Aaj Kal

This one required a mature voice for its expressive Punjabi lyrics. Music director Pritam made the right choice by handing the job to Master Saleem, as he has really made the track his own.

Humka Peeni Hai – Dabangg

While other songs from Dabangg grabbed more attention than this one, Humka Peeni Hai is also a very worthy track. The high amounts of energy put into it by the singers gave the actors a lot of ground to work with.

Rola Pe Gaya – Patiala House

This one from the film Patiala House is a great dance number sung by various artists including Master Saleem. Despite Shankar Mahadevan, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Hard Kaur and Earl having lent their voices to this track, Saleem’s voice is instantly recognizable.

Hindi is not the only language Master Saleem sings in, as his Punjabi songs are also very popular up North.

She is one of the finest artists in the world right now, and has given us some really unforgettable music over the past few years. Lorde started her career in 2009, but was able to achieve mainstream success only in 2013. From thereon, the journey of this Kiwi singer, songwriter and record producer has been beyond phenomenal. Let us go through her best work and find out what her finest songs till date are.

Glory and Gore

Filled with dope beats and a catchy tune, Glory and Gore is an electropop track that has quite a bit of hip-hop influence in it. As its name suggests, this song’s lyrics are based on modern society’s fascination with violence and celebrity culture. It has been written by Lorde herself along with its producer, Joel Little.

Royals

Royals is another song which speaks about the travails of the luxury lives that today’s celebrities are living. It’s an electropop song which is part of her debut studio album Pure Heroine. What’s so interesting about Royals is its minimal production and lyrics. This makes it a unique composition which is augmented furthermore by Lorde’s voice.

Team

Lorde wrote this song as a tribute to her friends and her country. This is a track which has been performed by her live on many occasions. Her vocal delivery in this one is just phenomenal, to say the least. Team also has a very neatly made music video supporting it.

Tennis Court

Also from her debut album, Tennis Court was a huge hit back in the day. It combines various musical styles and presents us with an unforgettable track that’s filled with intensity. Interestingly, its music video has been captured as one single shot with Lorde singing while looking into the camera.

Yellow Flicker Beat

This song was released as the lead single from the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. It’s got a mysterious vibe going for it which intensifies as the song progresses. Lorde’s vocal performance in this one is also something to behold.

Those were the 5 tracks we think are the best that Lorde has given us. What’s your take?

Already on its way to 2 million YouTube views is the single Guitar Sikhda which was released by Jassie Gill just two days ago. The Punjabi singer, who is all set to make his Bollywood debut soon, has delivered yet another catchy number that’s funny and romantic in equal measure.

Guitar Sikhda by Jassie Gill
Guitar Sikhda by Jassie Gill

With Guitar Sikhda, Jassie has tried to address the juvenile things we end up doing because we have a crush on someone. Among them is the urge to impress them by playing a song on the guitar, hence the title.

Another funny reference to such an experience is in the first line of the song, wherein the singer says that he has learned to love his muse by listening to Enrique’s Hero. This is the note on which the song begins, reeling us in with its funny quotient.

As one would expect, the music is dominated by the guitar. The soft strums are accompanied by slow beats that set a steady pace for the track. Guitar Sikhda has a strong hip-hop vibe going for it, but it’s distinguished by Jassie’s trademark voice.

The video for this one is very much akin to the videos of other Punjabi songs that have taken over YouTube lately. A poor lovestruck man pining for the attention of an attractive rich girl is a trope that should have died ages ago.

What’s more, this poor man can afford to ride expensive bikes and wear lavish clothes, but doesn’t have enough loose change to put into a donation box. Almost no effort has been taken to make a good video, but the fact that it has already garnered so many views proves that they don’t need to.

Coming back to the song itself, this one is a promising release by Jassie Gill, and is sure to please his fans.

In a big move, Apple has made it clear that students who are subscribed to Apple Music will be provided a subscription of Apple TV+, the company’s new TV and movie streaming service, for free. November 1 is when the service is slated to be launched for Apple users from around the world. If you’re unaware, students are already getting discounts on Apple Music, which sweetens the whole deal furthermore for them.

While regular customers need to shell out $9.99 per month for subscribing to Apple Music, students only need to give $4.99 per month for the same. As for Apple TV+, its subscription costs $4.99 per month for others, whereas students can grab it for free. As for the Indian prices, Apple Music can be yours for Rs 99 per month, and for Rs 49 per month for students. Apple TV+ on the other hand, costs Rs 99 per month in India, but like we said, it will be available for free for students subscribing to Apple Music.

With TV+, Apple wants to get into the streaming media market that’s being dominated by Netflix right now. Netflix however, boasts of a massive subscriber base, while Apple has to start anew. This is perhaps the reason why Apple, not known for offering things for cheap, let alone for free, has decided to take this step. Having a substantial subscriber base will enable it to streamline its future plans better.

Apple has prepared an attractive line-up of original programming to attract users towards its service. These include a drama series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, and a reboot of the anthology series Amazing Stories by Steven Spielberg. One of their flagship launch shows is a sci-fi drama titled See, which stars Jason Momoa, and takes place in the distant future when humans have lost the sense of sight, which leads to the society being forced to find new ways to interact, build, hunt and survive.

November 1 is when the Apple TV+ will be accessible through all iOS devices that have been updated to the latest version of the software.

If one remade song wasn’t enough for you, the soundtrack of Bala has been blessed with another recreated track. Thankfully enough, this time around, the song has been made by its original creators themselves, saving the makers of the film from another possible controversy. The track is called ‘Naah Goriye,’ and is a recreation of the song ‘Naah,’ by B Praak, Jaani and Harrdy Sandhu. The same artists have worked on the new track, with Swasti Mehul Jain being the only new addition in the vocals department.

‘Naah Goriye’ doesn’t deviate much from the original. It adds a female voice for the chorus though. But the music has changed a great deal for the song. More thumping beats adorn the background this time around, perhaps to make it more suitable for parties. Harrdy Sandhu’s vocals are just as zesty as before, but the addition of Swasti Mehul Jain hasn’t quite added much to the song. However, she does a pretty good job with the vocals.

‘Naah Goriye’ has also been blessed with a music video featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Bajwa, apart from Harrdy Sandhu. In the video, Ayushmann has a full set of hair on his head, which leads you to believe it’s just a promotional track rather than something from the film itself.

Bala is a film directed by Amar Kaushik, who had directed Stree last. Produced by Dinesh Vijan, it stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam and Bhumi Pednekar, apart from the likes of Javed Jaffrey, Saurabh Shukla and Seema Pahwa. The film tells the story of a man facing lack of confidence and societal pressure due to his balding.

Bala is slated to hit theatres on November 7. Meanwhile, you can watch the video of its latest song ‘Naah Goriye’ in the space above.
