As he nears his birthday month, let’s take a look at what makes him worthy of the title of Mister Perfectionist.

Showed us it’s cool to be a young Indian

One movie that brought a defining turn in the way Hindi movies were being made in the last few decades was Dil Chahta Hai

This coming of age movie about three young urban Indian men was something Bollywood had never really given much thought to earlier, and no doubt it became an instant cult movie, not just popular with the younger audience but with everyone. Not only did he pay attention to details including hair styling, choice of clothes, language and mannerisms, the movie also touched on other social topics that young adults go through their evolving years.

The dialogues were full of a sense of taking pride in the country, without going overboard or sounding fake, while the witty sarcasm was full of reality and showed us how waiting for politicians to make things right was not the right choice. The honest camaraderie between friends, A R Rahman’s music, realistic locations and the very real life characters rekindled our sense of friendship, family values, and patriotism.

Doesn’t churn out movies but takes time to give the best

Unlike a lot of other actors who have a string of new releases one after the other, this Mister Khan takes his time to give us only the best, even if it may mean doing just one movie in a year or two. Those who work with him often talk about how he is never okay with something unless he feels he has done his best, no matter how much time or effort it might take.

This directorial debut was Aamir Khan’s take on our society’s obsession with pressuring children to get the best marks and follow textbook methods of teaching. His role of the understanding and caring art teacher who manages to reach through to his dyslexic student made many families connect immediately. The subject was talked about for months and discussions were held on whether or not India needs to be more attuned to the changing times and focus on giving our children better learning and understanding, instead of just rote learning.

The story was simple, yet Aamir Khan turned it into one that got nominated in the Oscars. His detail to costume, dialect, body language, setting, location, music and small everyday details is what helped his simpleton hero to make the movie so real and spectacular and endearing to all.

Most of his movies, including the very recent Secret Superstar, continue to break norms and talk about real life stories that many of our actors and producers wouldn’t think much about. It’s this detail and passion of Aamir Khan that makes him the Perfectionist Khan.
