After the success of PadMan, Akshay Kumar is back in his patriotic form as a coach of a pre-independence Indian hockey team. And like a true coach Akshay expressed to the media how important winning a gold medal is for anybody at the launch of a song from his forthcoming film Gold.
“Sports day in school was always such an important event in everyone’s lives. And the first prize for winning was always gold, then silver and then bronze. Winning the Gold medal is a big deal. Two years back my son won a gold medal for martial arts, he got his black belt and we celebrated the occasion. It is a big thing for a family and even for the country. However, that does not mean that when we do not get it, we should not feel weak but that should be an incentive to work harder and put in more effort,” said Akshay.
In Gold, Akshay plays the role of hockey coach Tapan Das, who dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal for India. The film has been shot in the United Kingdom as well as in India and is directed by Reema Kagti, who has previously helmed films such as Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Talaash.

Akshay had to work with a dialect coach to get the accent of a Bengali man right. Akshay who has spent two years of his life in Kolkata said, “I have lived and worked in Kolkata for two years and that helped me with the dialect but yes the coach too helped me. I did not have to learn to speak in Bengali but had to learn the accent.”
Akshay also feels that there are so many other sports besides cricket, that needs to be brought into the limelight. He said, “Besides cricket, there are so many other sports, people should be made aware of them and it is a great thing that hockey is gaining importance. Hockey is an important game, and I hope after this film releases hockey gets the respect it deserves.”
Akshay also shared about his love for hockey while in school and how he used to be part of the hockey team as a goalie! We hope Gold is a sure shot goal Akshay!
