Sometimes it takes endless hard work and grueling dedication to achieve fame, to earn a place in the pages of history. But sometimes all it takes is just a selfie! Yeah, you heard that right! Yesterday during the World Festival of Families concert in Croke Park, a twelve-year-old girl by the name of Alison Nevin did just that when she asked the Pope for a selfie and he agreed!

According to the people who were present at the festival, the whole Croke Park came alive when Alison took her selfie with Pope Francis. When asked about how she managed to do it, Alison explained that initially she had asked a staff if she could take a picture with the Pope and they denied. She then snuck the phone up her sleeves and then went up to meet him, asked him if she could take a picture, pointing at her phone, to which the Pope promptly agreed.

First take away from this incident- don’t trust the staff all the time, and second, Pope Francis continues to pioneer many “firsts” in the history of the Vatican. Alison, whose video of clicking her selfie with the Pope has gone viral all over the internet, is now being inundated with positive reactions and messages of goodwill. Apparently, she was determined to get the selfie with the Pontiff, having missed a chance before three years ago when she and her mother traveled to Rome as part of a delegation from the Parish of the Travelling People in Dublin.

Given how Pope Francis never shies away from steering Catholic Church down roads that have been never taken before, one must wonder if this means that the clergy will finally catch up with the self-portrait making mania of the new age. Perhaps the world will soon wake up to the Pope posting his first selfie on his official social media accounts! Given how the Christian community has accepted Alison’s daring move so cheerfully and with open arms, perhaps keeping up with a few of the trends that are integral to today’s youth culture will serve to be beneficial for the Vatican to be able to communicate better, in a more relevant way to the younger generations.

Regardless of whether the clergy hops on this selfie train or not, one fact remains unchangeable, that Alison is perhaps the coolest pre-teen out there for asking the Pope for the click, and Pope Francis is even cooler for agreeing to it like it’s no big deal. Oh, how times are a-changin’!
