Here’s Why Ravi Shastri’s One-Liner Has Our Jaws on the Floor

Is it just his age that got in the way of his normal thought process?

Ravi Shastri’s post-match interview is going to make you scratch your head thinking how can a cricket legend and long-time commentator blurt out stuff that he did on international television? The match was quite nerve-wracking but it seems like Shastri took a whole other route to express the nervousness and tension at the final day in Adelaide, filled with drama.

India started out short of six wickets to secure an epic first opening Test win in Australia. The hosts required 219 runs for a victory that seemed a little far-fetched, to be honest. But, Australia had its hopes high, thanks to Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Ravi Ashwin bagged the final wicket and gave India a lead by 31 runs but it perhaps got a little too close for Shastri’s comfort. So, the man resorted to his national language after the match and was recorded saying something in Hindi, which exactly translates to, “We will not spare them at all but we had balls in our mouth for a short while there.”

Okay, let’s take a minute to understand what this current Indian Cricket Team Coach was up to when he made such a comment quite unexpectedly and since its television, perhaps even unethically. He was in conversation with ex-players Sunil Gavaskar, Michael Clarke and Mark Butcher and Gavaskar seemed to have saved some grace by refusing to translate his statement for the English-speaking colleagues. Like, duh! The broadcast would’ve been watched overseas and by families.

Like with every controversial comment a famous someone makes, social media had split opinions about this fiasco. While some thought it was funny, some thoroughly criticised the one- liner. Mr. Shastri, we understand it must have been edge-of-the-seat stuff for you, but the cameras staring at you should’ve been given a heads up that things like these aren’t supposed to be voiced on international television.

Even though news sites and newspapers had their own distinctive ways of dealing with this rather unusual piece of news, the general reaction is quite similar: “what on earth did he just say?” However, the humour that followed in the tweets by twitters throughout the country is something that did bring a smile on your faces.
