Ed Sheeran’s track The Shape of You needs no introduction. While the song broke a lot of records in the music industry, with almost everyone hooked on to it, it did not immediately strike a chord with me, but rather grew on me.
A few months back, I happened to hear a remix of this same song, but the interesting bit was that it came with a Carnatic mix added into the song, that gave this song an entirely new flavour and angle. Honestly, it’s been a few months now and I am still listening to this regularly on my playlist.
If you haven’t heard it yet, which I doubt anyone who is interested in music or Shape of You would, the track is mixed by the extremely talented trio of Aditya Rao, Vinod Krishnan and Mahesh Raghvan.
Of course there are countless versions and remixes of this track, but what makes this particular one different for me is the way they have fused in the original with a music genre I never thought I would like. With a mix of classical Indian music, the very contemporary pop music and a great use of electronic music, the three musicians have managed to tap in to the interest palate of not only the current, but a diverse range of generations.

For me, Carnatic music has never held any appeal. In fact, this is true for most classical forms of music when it comes to my personal taste. I can tell you that Mister Boss absolutely loves listening to the Carnatic tracks he has in his playlist. Then again, I have a sister who is a classical singer herself. But even though we all are of the same generation, the divide in music taste is huge, and of course personal.
The reason I really loved this track was not just because of the musical genius this mix has proved to be, with more than 4.1 million views from viewers across the world, but for the fact that they managed to tap into the personal tastes of people from such vast geographical boundaries as well as managed to scale the generation walls, and brought together people of different age and culture to tune in and love this mix.
