Hook-Up Culture: Boon Or A Curse?

It definitely sounds great. But is it? Great?

Once upon a time, there was a wonderful boy. He met this really pretty girl at a party. Then, some beautiful background music played. And then, they happily lived ever after. Oh, did they? We don’t think so, given the current scenario. We all like to imagine living in a world where such fairytales actually occur, but the reality is far from it. We live in the world that has adopted the so called ‘hook-up culture’. The modern dating scenario is really complex but is it good or is it bad, who’s to judge? No body. All we can do is talk about it. So let’s!

Pleasure-On-Demand Because Why Not?

You just want sex. You can get JUST sex.

The one very evident characteristic of modern dating is ‘sex’. Modern dating has normalized sex and has turned it into a leisure or entertainment activity. The whole idea of ‘saving sex’ for the perfect partner is long gone. And for good! While I would like to be very supportive of seeing sex just as a recreational activity and normalizing it, I’d also entertain the idea of casual sex with no-strings-attached. But, the real question is that where does this need for casual sex arise from? If it is something we do just to get rid of our feelings of emptiness and unhappiness, are we sure it’s a healthy practice?

No, We Are Not Just Sex-Crazed Emotionless Humans

because sometimes hooking-up is the more mature and thoughtful decision.

This new hook-up culture often comes under scrutiny of adults. And most of them are extremely critical about it. They probably think that this generation is full of sex-crazed emotionless kids. But, I beg to differ. This generation wants love, long conversations, and meaningful relationships just as much as any other generation. The hook-up culture is DEFINITELY not a replacement for that. It is something else. The Hook-up culture is more about meeting and dare I say ‘trying’ as many people as possible, before settling for good. It is also about relaxing and letting go of that day to day stress. It is about not being in that position in life where you can invest time and efforts into something serious. And I think that’s a more thoughtful and mature decision than to enter into something you are sure you cannot handle. It is more about independence than being scared of commitment.

It’s Not Meant For Everyone

There are people who just cannot indulge in the hook-up culture. They still crave romance.

We also find people well into this culture and fighting too hard to NOT be in a relationship. Now, that’s not exactly the right way. You can be into a casual relationship and still ask questions about each other or share breakfast. What are they scared of? And then there are people who just cannot be a part of this. The hopeless romantics! The ones who grew up on movies like ‘Veer Zara’ and ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘The Notebook’! They are all FOR cute romantic gestures and they want to fall right into it. IT, being the pool of love! They prefer being single when they don’t want a relationship, instead of indulging in casual hook-ups. They prefer falling in love and having someone who is proud of them. They prefer dating over mindless hook-ups.

So basically, it’s all about what you want! If this culture works for you, INDULGE, my friend.
