“I think, if you tell me that you do not know how to wear a saree, I would say shame on you,” says Sabyasachi.
And opens up the floodgates.
At the recent Harvard India Conference, designer Sabyasachi, while addressing a group of students, criticized Indian women for giving up on wearing a saree.
According to the designer, Indian women are more interested in wearing western clothes which is a shame, because (the designer feels that) this is the reason why we are losing out on something that is culturally so intrinsic to our roots.
He feels it is up to each woman in India to stand up and defend the saree in these times of changing fashion, and not give in to other forms of dressing up. This apparently got him a huge round of applause at the event that was being moderated by Nidhi Razdan.

One of the biggest grudges that the designer seems to hold is that, in an age where the saree is being taken up by countries and runways across the globe, it is being neglected in its own country.
Of course he also went on to say that while the saree, which is still kept alive somehow even though it is slowly being forgotten, the dhoti is already dead. But in the same breath, he went on to talk about other things, without the need to shame men, as he earlier did by shaming women.
The audience was amused and very intrigued, but as far as our Indian ladies are concerned, the remarks have not gone down well.
#SabyasachiMukherjee how can a woman be judged on her ability to drape a piece of cloth! Our women have been to the moon and back! You don’t need a place of cloth to decide their capabilities #shame @sabya_mukherjee

Whether this was part of a smart and planned promotion still needs to be seen, but one thing is for sure – whether we love him or hate him, our grandmas will surely love the man!
