Stop Looking Down On Millennials!

If anything, be proud of us!

Before we begin, what is a millennial? As per most of the sources, people who have birth years ranging from 1980 to 1997 belong to the millennial generation. Millennial is a term coined by Neil Howe and William Strauss in 1991. They strongly believed that every generation is distinct from the one before. Which, we can agree upon. Because, cultural shifts and advancements in technology obviously causes a said generation to act differently than their previous generation!

But, is it justified to look down on an entire generation on the basis of certain misconstrued conclusions?

Millennials Are Entitled

If anything, we work really hard and like to party in afterhours.

But are we, really? Most of the Millennials are crumbling under the load of student loans and unemployment. Others are just figuring out what to do with their lives. Okay yes, this is a generation that has really adapted to the conveniences of modern technology. Yes, this generation has better access to everything through the internet. Yes, we do not have to walk and fetch water from a nearby village. But are we really going to be judged for optimum utilization of all the available resources. What gives any one the right to downgrade our personalities and look down on us, just because we have better resources? This doesn’t sound fair at all.

Millennials Are Lazy

If anything, we are always running in the race for our glory.

As far as I know and see, this generation is more competitive and more hardworking than any other generation. This is a generation that was born in a shark pool of competition. Every student of this generation knows how badly they were grilled throughout their academic period in order to finally land a satisfactory job. Don’t even get me started on the rat race for that great job. After going through all of this, how can we be reduced to being lazy? Okay, we don’t have to write handwritten letters because we can now *text* but you know what we have to do? We have to learn to write in multiple languages because that’s the demand of today’s competition. Trust me; we have no time to be lazy.

Millennials Are Whiners

if anything, we are resilient, smart and visionary.

Now this is absolutely incorrect. Just few days back, I wrote an article on The Millennial Optimism. And it’s true; Millennials are extremely optimistic and positively ambitious. This generation seeks more from life than you can imagine. We might be sensitive, but it’s the sensitivity to excel and do our best. Today, Millennials are driven, hard working, and are changing the world around them. They aren’t busy whining. No time for that either!

We humans came up with a word called Millennial to define a generation for our own convenience. Do not let it become derogatory word. Let it be what it is meant to be. Let Millennials be Millennials and stop generalizing.
