Sunny Leone Warding Off Evil Eyes In An Andhra Village

Around the world people use different kinds of talismans to ward off evil and bring good luck in. These talismans change in accordance with the tradition and culture of the people. This custom of protecting oneself or one’s properties from evil is seen as a harmless superstition. An Andhra farmer has gone a bit too long in warding off evil. He has put the picture of Sunny Leone at his field to keep off the evil eyes from his vegetable crops. The farmer Chenchu Reddy of Banda Kindi Palle village believes that the picture of Sunny Leone in a red bikini will save his crops from jealous looks of his neighbours and passersby.

In Northern America it is said that people use nine articles to ward off evil. They range from arrow head to scarab beetle. During the Middle Ages it was believed that stuffing a mummified cat into floors or ceiling rafters would protect the house from witchcraft. Witch bottles containing disgusting potions, mostly mix of herbs and human urine, were used in protecting people from evil spell of witches. The Chinese believed that spirits travelled only in straight lines, so they curved their roofs in order to confuse them.

In India various articles are used as talismans. Lemon and chillies, pumpkin with a scary face drawn on it, coconut and camphor, red chillies and rock salt are a few of the many articles which are warding off evil spirits in India for long. Even an aquarium or fish-tank is placed in a house for the same purpose. But Chenchu Reddy’s novel idea is sheer out of the box thinking.

“This year, I have a good crop on 10 acres. This has been attracting unnecessary attention of villagers and passersby. To ward off their evil eye, I thought of this idea of putting up the big poster of Sunny Leone,” Chenchu Reddy said. The farmer doesn’t think he has done anything indecent. When asked whether agriculture officials will find the picture objectionable, he said that the officials never bothered to come to the fields to find out their problems. So in no way they would find it objectionable. He has put the picture of a film star in public making the curvaceous looks of the actress diverting the evil eyes of passersby off his vegetable crops. Though it is distasteful and a bit ill-mannered the farmer has done this ‘warding off’ thing only to save his crops. Let us hope that in our ‘viral world’ this Sunny Leone scarecrow doesn’t become a trend.
