The Biggest Museum In New York Has Given Free Access To 50 Years Of Art Books

Some of the best Museums from around the world are found in New York. And now one of them has taken the greatest leap towards promoting interest in art and culture.

More than 5000 years of art history has been made available online for free by New York’s biggest museum, the Metropolitan Museum for Art. The Met offers an online database of over 1,500 titles of art books, online publications, bulletins, and journals from the last five decades for readers, artists and art-lovers to enjoy for free.

From Mughal painting of India, to ancient Egyptian medicine to Chinese calligraphy, all is available. Many of these publications may not be affordable for lay students and art amateurs. They are now available, categorised into ‘Recently Published,’ ‘Favourite Titles,’ ‘Books With Full Text Online,’ and ‘Notable Exhibition Catalogues.’

Readers can locate works of art from the Met’s collection that feature in every book recorded in the last 60 years. Users now have access to out-of-print publications and can browse through expert recommended lists.

From Van Gogh’s drawings to French art deco, all is available for art lovers who have not be able to travel as far as New York. This has been added to the treasure trove of 400,000 free art images the museum put online last year.

While you may have to spend thousands of rupees to order a book on art history from Amazon, now you can get it for free. In the age where technology and social media rule the day, this is a great move to recall the roots of art and culture.

In January this year, Google Art and Culture app had made an effort to revive the passion for art among its users. Their new feature lets you compare your selfie with a classical art piece. It is a face-matching tool that allows you to find your famous museum doppelgänger.

So, now you can dig into the treasure trove of art with a good internet connection, even on your phone, without having to travel anywhere.
