When Three Australian Runners Set A New Example In Sportsmanship

Not many people had heard of the country called Lesotho until the true-blue gesture of sportsmanship in Commonwealth Games 2018. Lineo Chaka, representing Lesotho, was running 10,000m event. Unfortunately, she did not fare well enough at the event, and was the last one to finish the race.

Chaka Completed 5 Minutes After The Gold Winner

Chaka was a little more than 5 minutes behind the gold winner, Stella Chesang of Uganda. As all the other runners crossed the finishing line one by one, Chaka kept running to finish her laps. All the runners left the track after a burst of excitement after zooming past the finishing line, except three runners from Australia.

Three Australians Cheered Chaka

Celia Sullohern, Madeline Hills and Eloise Wellings are the three Australian runners who set a new example of true-blue sportsmanship, when they waited on the track for about 4 minutes, as Chaka of Lesotho was finishing her laps. They kept clapping, cheering, and waiting for Chaka to finish her race in the event. Along with them, the audience also kept cheering Chaka and displayed their support throughout till she crossed the finishing line. The audience went on to give Chaka a standing ovation once she finished her final lap.

They Waited To Hug Chaka At The End Of Her Final Lap

As audiences, we might not have any clue, as to how it feels to finish last in such an event in an international sports format. In such situations, it is only human to look for some encouragement and a gesture of love at the end of it. As Chaka finally reached the finishing line, she received just those. The three girls went ahead, congratulated Chaka, and hugged her, overwhelming her with it all. The trio walked out of the track with Lineo Chaka.

Of course, the gesture did not go unnoticed. The Commonwealth Games 2018 chair Peter Beattie has tweeted about it admiring the Aussie girls and their gesture. Amidst winners winning gold, silver, and bronze, these girls have gone on to win the hearts of the audience present there, and also across the world. Sports will thrive as long as such gestures of sportsmanship continues.
