Why It Is Good To Dance Like No One’s Watching

Why Virat Kohli is one of us when he chuckles at his own dance?

The captain of the Indian cricket team is a national heartthrob. He is proving the ideal man, blowing kisses to his girlfriend from the stadium, protecting her from Twitter trolls, marrying her in the most romantic way, and then doing all this while playing like a legend on the cricket field.

Recently he again proved why he is exactly like someone amongst us when he innocently broke into a mini-dance while fielding. Is this not exactly what we do when we are in a happy state? A tiny shake-a-leg when we are thinking of our BAE, or when the lecture has been cancelled, or when the boss leaves early from office.

So, why it is important to dance like Kohli as if no one is watching?

Dancing puts a smile on your face, which is a reason more valuable than all the scientific proof put together. Dancing automatically releases the happy hormones, and shaking a leg without any reason, or grooving to ‘Urvashi’ is better than any artificial therapy.

If you are someone who needs proof to break a leg, this is it. Dancing has been shown to reduce feelings of depression. Just five minutes of freestyle dancing is enough to increase your creativity, according to researchers at Sheffield and York Universities. In 2015, researchers at the University of Oxford found that group dancing can increase a person’s threshold for pain, by releasing endorphins.

And dancing is more fun when it is not saved for the club. No need to deck up for the Saturday night or wait for the friend’s sangeet night or wait for the annual bonanza of Navratri, just think of Kohli, and dance impromptu, as if no one’s watching. This is the best kind of move.

Dancing is also important because it helps you to laugh at yourself. Those who take themselves too seriously are never relaxed. But it is fine to chuckle at your own idiocy. This is what Virat Kohli did when Shane Warne showed him the video the next day. He just giggled at himself and walked away.

So, while we admire Virat Kohli for many reasons, he has given us one more endearing moment. We might not be able to play cricket like him, but we can definitely dance like no one’s watching.
