Do you love or hate figs? Well, I love figs! But even though I’ve been a huge fan of figs, I wasn’t aware that figs are not really fruits but flowers! We bet many of you like me were unaware. Let’s check out more facts about figs and see why they are not fruits but flowers!

Time To Unlearn Your Facts About Figs

There is everything about a fig that could make you believe it’s a fruit, but wait. There’s a lot about it that also proves that it’s a flower!

What?

Much unlike other fruits, such as peaches or apples, figs don’t really flower. In fact, their flowers bloom inside their pod, which turns into the fruit that we ultimately eat. Each flower in the pod then produces the hard-shelled, one-seeded fruit called achene. If you love the crunchiness that figs have, they’re actually coming from these achenes. So, when you’re eating a fig, you’re actually eating multiple fruits at a time!

What if I told you that when you eat a fig, you’re technically eating a fig wasp? Well, not always though! In this case, it’s not the wind or the bees that help in pollinating the figs, but actually, the figs need the wasps to survive, and vice versa.

Would You Eat A Fig After This?

Are you scared that the crunch you love in the fig is actually that of the wasp carcass? The enzymes in the fig turn the wasp into protein. But, and hold your breath, there could be rare occasions when this process does not happen completely, and well, some leftovers may still be there, from the wasp. So technically, when you are eating a fig, there is the tiniest of chance that you are actually biting into a wasp carcass. Sounds gross, eh?

Vegans, take a call here. As for me, well, I’m not a vegan!
