What are the lunch arrangements at your workplace? Do you order food daily or bring leftovers from home? Do you hate the daily hassle of preparing tiffin for office? Or do you end up eating junk food, since you have no time for a healthy tiffin? What if you start an office lunch club? All you need is a group of people who are willing to join and everyone takes turns to prepare food for the entire club. This is a great alternative to eating out fast food every day and spending time bringing lunch from home. Much healthier for you, in the long run, you can eat the same food together, as a family!

How Can You Set Up An Office Lunch Club?

· Make a group of people and decide on a specific day for each person to cook and bring food for the other members

  • Decide what you’ll be cooking beforehand, keeping in mind everyone’s likes and dislikes
  • You can keep a toaster, a hot plate, electric grill or an induction cook-top with some basic groceries ready, for instant heating or seasoning
  • If needed, everyone can bring their own plates, napkins and other utensils
  • Make sure that there’s enough food for every member

When a few office going women spoke to HotFridayTalks.com sharing their views about the Office Lunch Club, these are the pros and cons that came to the forefront:

Nivedita feels it’s a different kind of fun to have food together with your colleagues

Nivedita Rath was very excited and she loved the idea. “It gets really boring when you cook for yourself or a specific person cooks for you daily. Also, there is no fun in eating food all alone, through this method we can taste different kinds of food cooked by other members and can enjoy eating together in a group! Of course, when your turn will come u have to work hard for cooking for so many members, but its ok for the happiness we can derive from it.” says Nivedita.

Swarnali feels, it may not be a great idea and could actually affect our daily work

Swarnali Banerjee, however, has a different perspective on it. She says, “While it sounds like a great idea, it might not be something feasible on a daily basis. It would depend on the workload we have, and once we commit to it on a particular day, it might impact our work. It may be a good idea for a big team of 20-30 members, but these days, we hardly have time for lunch. During work pressure, we at times even forget our lunch or have some dry snacks that are available. It may be a good idea for people who can have elaborate lunch for a good 1 hour time!”

Tatini feels a lunch club at office can actually bring about unity among colleagues

Tatini Dey, on the other hand, thinks it to be a really nice concept. “It’s a good idea, especially when we are in a mixed culture, as people of one state can present the local dish to members of other states and tastes. This would also, in turn, build unity among the club members. The gesture of taking out time from our busy schedules and preparing something apart from ppts for our colleague friends would be different and fun. Food is something that no one can say NO to. A lunch club will be a way to unite people of diverse cultures and will also allow us to experiment and innovate with the regular dishes we prepare”, says Tatini.

So, there you are! Propose the idea at your offices already and be prepared for some lunch-time fun daily!
