Everything You Wanted To Know About Spumoni

Spumoni pronounced spuh-MOH-nee or spoo-MOH-nee is a must try frozen treat!

 

You might have tried all types of ice creams from sorbets to soft serve, gelatos, sherbet, frozen yogurt etc. etc. but have you tried Spumoni? If you haven’t then you sure must.

What Is Spumoni?
Spumoni is a frozen molded Italian dessert which is made of two layers of different flavours of ice cream but what makes it different and interesting is that a layer of sweetened whipped cream that has been flavored with rum and mixed with toasted nuts and candied fruit is sandwiched between the two flavours.The tiny bits of fruit and nuts gives the Spumoni an interesting taste. Spumoni is said to have originated in Naples but it is now also t is now popular and available in places with large Italian immigrant populations.

What are the different types of Spumoni?
While each layer of spumoni ice cream includes more than just flavored ice cream. For example, the chocolate layer may include chocolate chips, chunks or chocolate shavings. Some even have crushed hazelnuts or pistachos inside. The fruit layer is usually made with candied fruit. Spumoni also comes in the strawberry or raspberry flavors, but cherry is the the traditional fruit for Spumoni. Sometimes Spumoni is also served with a sweet sauce that goes with the ice cream flavors.

Fun Facts About Spumoni

Did you know that Spumoni is never served scooped but it’s only served in slices?

Some people also believe that the banana split ice cream we all love, may be related to Spumoni because the ice cream flavours used in Banana Split too are strawberry and chocolate and the splits are often topped with nuts and whipped cream too just like Spumoni.

Our very own Indian Cassata ice cream is very similar to Spumoni.

There is a National Spumoni Day which is celebrated on 21 August.
