Foods With Unbelievably Weird Names

Okay, let me start by telling you a true food story that perhaps would go down as the funniest in my lifetime. A few years ago, I was invited at a Turkish friends’ home for a dinner. Quite excited about trying the Turkish cuisine; as soon as I was there, I asked my friend what was on the menu. Just then, his mom came out of the kitchen and said – ‘The Imam fainted.’ Presuming that some tragedy befell an imam close to the family because of which she could not cook, I immediately said, ‘I am so sorry. We can have dinner some other day.’ Everyone around me gave an offended look. And it was only after a few more confusing exchanges that I was able to decipher that – ‘The Imam fainted,’ was actually the name of a dish made of eggplants in Ottoman cuisine!

But looks like this is not the only dish which comes with a name far removed from its ingredients or origin. As imaginative as the food world is, there are in fact many more dishes that can make your heads spin. Not with the taste but with their weird names.

Here are a few of them that you must try and share funny food stories with your friends and family!

Toad In A Hole: No Toad And No Hole But Only Sausages

A British dish it’s made of sausages in a Yorkshire style pudding

A dish that has its origin in the UK, hardly sounds like something you would want to read off a menu. But as weird as it may sound, toad in a hole is a rather popular dish in Britain made of sausages laid over a pastry. If you still feel queasy about ordering it, we don’t think we can blame you.

Welsh Rabbit: Psstt…The Vegetarians Can Safely Savour It

You are allowed to pass it on to your vegetarian friend

A dish with a cutesy name such as Welsh Rabbit could only be possibly ordered by a real meat fiend. After all who can fancy a rabbit with its curious look to be served as an entrée? But if we were to tell you that there is not a hint of meat here perhaps you may want to try it. Made of cheese poured over bread it is a dish safe for a vegetarian.

Ladyfingers: No, Not The Boring Bhindi This!

How about some ladyfinger for main course and lady fingers for dessert?

As curious as it may sound but ladyfingers can be your dessert too. And no, we ain’t talking about some weird bhindi halwa but rather a delicate pastry filled cookies. Sure, they come in slender shapes but that’s where the similarities end. Dip it in tiramisu and you are in dessert heaven. Now, don’t tell us you are not tempted to try these dishes even more because of their odd names!
