We all know the Gujaratis enjoy their theplas for breakfast and the Punjabis start their day with stuffed parathas and dahi or white butter, while the Rajasthanis love their fried snacks like samosas, mirchi bhajias etc. mostly all the people down South like their dosas or idlis for breakfast.

Have you ever wondered what the rest of India eats as the first meal of the day? Take a look:

Jammu and Kashmir

A typical Kashmiri breakfast consists of freshly-baked breads either from the kandur(bakery) or baked at home in their tandoors, served with noon chai or salty tea.Some of their local breads include girda, which is a disc-shaped flatbread and lavaas. During winter, the same is had with lamb hareesa.

Kerala

They like to start their day with Puttu which is a soft steamed rice cake, made with rice flour and grated coconut and steamed inside a bamboo stalk. They have it either with kadala curry which is black chickpeas or chicken, vegetable or egg stew.

Karnataka

The akki roti is something that is mostly had only in Karnataka. It’s basically a thin pancake made of rice flour and spices with chopped vegetables and eaten with molga podi.

Goa

The Goans love their spicy patal bhaji or tonak curry made with coconut, roasted whole spices, and potatoes. It is eaten with freshly baked pav, that is baked in wood fired mud ovens in the local bakeries. For those who like non-vegetarian food, poi which is a soft bread stuffed with goan delicious spiced pork sausages chorizo can be had.

Assam

This Assamese breakfast is not only healthy but also easy to make. It’s just soaked flattened rice or chivda, served with milk, cream or yoghurt and jaggery on the side. It’s filling and quick to make.

Manipur

A typical traditional Manipuri breakfast includes a savoury flatbread called tan, had along with black tea or changang. There are several variations of tan. The temai tan is seasoned with garlic chives, freshly grated ginger and turmeric powder for flavour.

West Bengal

The people in Bengal love kochuris made of urad dal eaten along with aloo dum curry. Their breakfast also includes luchis(which is like puri) with aloo tarkari or bhaji as it’s known as all over India.

Orissa

The Odias are also rice loving people, their breakfast includes chakuli pitha (fried rice cakes) eaten with white pea curry or ghuguni.

Bihar

The breakfast in Bihar is one of the most filling and healthy, parathas stuffed with sattu and spices. Sattu is said to be very healthy, it’s basically flour made with roasted gram flour mixed with grains. Some even mix the sattu powder in water and drink it for breakfast.
