These tips will protect your skin and hair from the aftermath of Holi

5 skin and hair care tips for Holi

The festival of colours is just about here, and even as you read this, you must already have witnessed one spot of gulaal or one water balloon being thrown at someone out there on the streets.

While Holi is surely a festival full of fun and masti, the one big concern is what it does to our hair and skin. If you’re worried about playing Holi only because it could damage your skin and hair, try these tips to protect yourself, and enjoy the festival with your family and friends.

Oil up

Applying oil on your hair and skin before you step out to play Holi will prevent the colours from sticking and causing abrasion or damage, prevent excess dryness and itching on the skin and scalp. Warm some coconut oil, olive oil or castor oil and apply on your scalp, hair and especially the end of the hair. Also apply it on your face and skin, especially on your elbows, feet and hands. Do this at least 30 minutes before you will play with colour.

Use nail paint

You can actually put your nail paints to good use by applying colour on your nails and adding a preventive top coat. This will somewhat protect your nail bed and cuticles from the colours seeping in.

Lip care

Apply a layer of lip balm over your lips so that the colours do not stick on the lips. This will prevent them from getting too dry and chapping or peeling. Don’t apply the tinted and glossy ones as these easily come off, but apply something that will be more long lasting.

For the eyes

If you wear lenses, avoid wearing them when you go out to play Holi. If the colour enters your eyes, which can often happen if people throw colours or apply colour suddenly on your face, it will not only damage the lenses but can also increase the risk of an eye infection. Wear your glasses instead.

For the face

Apply some coconut oil on your face as well to prevent the colours from straining your face. Also, if you are planning to get any beauty procedures done on the face, such as threading or waxing, do it at least 3 to 4 days before or after Holi.

To clean the colour off your face, it is best to apply some natural cleaning agents such as raw milk, milk cream or malai or even your regular coconut oil. These will get the colour off without being harsh on your skin and will not strip it of your natural oils.
