Should you be concerned?

For others around you? YES!

On a serious note though, having smelly feet can be quite embarrassing, but if this is a recurring problem, it could also point to a health issue known as bromodosis. This is a condition where sweat builds up in your feet and causes bacteria to grow on your skin, which give off the odour.

Other skin infections around the feet as well as any fungal infection such as athlete’s foot can also cause foot odour. Also, if you regularly wear socks and closed shoes for long periods of time, it could cause sweat build-up, eventually causing your feet to smell.

How to get rid of smelly feet

Here are a few tips that will help you keep your feet clean and remove any signs of odour:

1. Foot scrub

Regularly scrubbing your feet with a pumice stone or a simple foot scrubber at home can help you remove the dead skin and prevent feeding bacteria that can otherwise grow in the area. You barely need a couple of minutes during your bath time each day to do this. Use a handheld foot scrubber and if you have some more time, use a foot exfoliating product.

2. Keep them dry

Often in a rush to head out we forget to dry ourselves properly, and this is especially true of the skin between your toes. Wet or moist skin can give rise to bacteria, so make sure you dry your feet properly, with special care in the areas and creases around the toes.

3. Use fresh socks

This is a no-brainer, but a lot of people are secretly guilty of wearing the same pair of socks multiple times, without washing them. Definitely avoid doing this. If you are running out of socks, buy a couple of new pairs! If you are running out of money, ask for a raise!

4. DIY foot soak

Make a foot soak by mixing water and regular vinegar in same amounts and a spoon of baking soda. Soak your feet and let it rest for about five to ten minutes. Wash off with cool water.

5. Powder with baking soda

Clean and dry your feet, then apply a layer of powder or baking soda and rub it all over the feet, and also in between the toes. Powder has astringent properties while baking soda has anti-bacterial properties, and both of these will help remove the odour.
