What Are The Immediate First Aid Tips If An Animal Bites You?

Here are some best ways to treat an animal bite

Who says you have to go all the way to a safari to bring back an animal bite? With pets around, or even the occasional stray incidents on the streets, there is always the risk of a sudden animal bite one can get.

You’ve already heard that the first rule is to not panic (as if huh!), but yes, it makes sense to hold your horses and take care of the first aid, instead of having a screaming or fainting spell.

So what should you do in case of an animal bite? Here’s what

Almost one half of all dog bites involve an animal owned by the victim's family or neighbors.

If it is just like a scratch and has barely broken the skin

  • Wash the wound area properly with water and some antiseptic soap (any soap if you don’t have immediate access to antiseptic soaps).
  • Gently dry the area with a clean towel.
  • Apply some antiseptic cream all over the wound area and cover it with a clean bandage or handkerchief.

Once the basics are done, we suggest you immediately get this examined by a doctor to avoid any complications.

You need IMMEDIATE MEDICAL HELP if

  • You are not sure whether or not it is a deep wound
  • It looks like a deep cut, puncture or deep bite
  • There is bleeding (in such a scenario, apply pressure around the wound with a bandage or clean cloth to stop the bleeding, but if you are not sure how, go immediately to a doctor)
  • Skin is torn and peeling off
  • Redness, swelling, pain or any oozing in or around the wound area (can indicate an infection)
  • You were bit by a stray animal
  • You were bit by a pet but not sure if the animal is vaccinated against rabies
  • You were bit by a wild animal
  • You did not receive a tetanus vaccine in at least the last 5 years
When a cat bites, its sharp canine teeth easily puncture the skin, leaving small, but deep, wounds in the skin.

Please remember that even though it may not seem that dangerous or big an issue, and if you have the heart of a lion who can take such bites in his or her stride, it is still a better idea to get medical help as soon as you can.

And in the meanwhile, in case you do get bit, remember you join the celebrity list of Shakira, Gordon Ramsay (WHICH animal had the guts to attack him???!!!) and Susan Sarandon among others.
