Foods to eat for better gut health

An Ayurvedic way for better digestive health

Our digestive health is directly related to our body’s immunity, our body’s power to heal and the mind’s ability to analyze situations. The reason half of the population is suffering from digestive disorders is because somewhere the “control” and “conscience” are lacking. It’s one thing to have the conscience to realize that your guts are the foundation for a sound body and mind; it’s another thing to actually take efforts to control your eating habits to have a better gut health.

Ayurveda had it all sorted out years ago.  The causes behind deteriorating gut health are precisely and surprisingly true in spite of the fact that they were mentioned in our scriptures thousands of years ago.

Some of the reasons behind a bad gut health are:-

1. Skipping meals or starving.
2. Over-eating or eating before the previous meal has fully digested.
3. Irregular diet patterns; eating more at times, eating less at other times.
4. An excess of cold, dry and heavy foods in continuity without following dietary rules.
5. Eating foods with qualities opposite to your body constitution.

Ayurveda’s advice on what to eat for a better gut health:-

1. Cow Ghee (Clarified Butter)

Ghee is the ancient super food and the world is slowly realizing this. It has innate qualities of healing the gut and forming a protective layer in the intestines. Scientifically speaking, ghee is rich in butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that nourishes the cells of the intestines. It boosts the digestive fire and improves digestion. Don’t forget to include 3-4 tsp of ghee in your daily diet. You can simply add it to your curries, dals or feast upon ghee rice that tastes like it’s come down straight from heaven.

2. Buttermilk

Buttermilk has wonderful qualities of reviving gut health. It is helpful in tackling severe cases of indigestion and other problems like IBS. For best results, it is advisable to consume freshly churned buttermilk. Avoid the consumption of refrigerator-stored buttermilk. Include one glass of fresh buttermilk in your post-lunch regimen daily.

3. Ginger Root

A small piece of ginger before a meal boosts the Agni (digestive fire) and stimulates the salivary glands so the process of digestion begins properly from the mouth itself. Ginger tastes best with a pinch of “Saindhav Lavana” or Rock Salt. Rock Salt is the healthiest version of salt and should be a part of your diet every day.

Including these foods in your diet is a good way of ensuring that your guts are happy!
