There’s always something more ‘real’ and endearing about movies based on real life, and this seems to be evident on the Oscar nomination and winning list too.

Titanic

The James Cameron directed movie that immediately made international stars out of Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet did take some creative liberties with what happened in real life, but there’s no doubt that most of it was inspired by real life events. The real life Titanic faced a similar fate as the one shown in the movie, as it hit an iceberg that was hid in haze, leading to the death of 1503 people including passengers and crew. It finally sank at 2:20 am local time on April 15 1912.

12 Years A Slave

The movie revolves around the true story of Solomon Northup who was kidnapped from his home in the North in the year 1841 and was sold as a slave. Most of what is shown in the movie is seen as a close adaptation of what happened in Solomon’s life for real. The fact that it is also inspired from events that Solomon Northup has written in the book by the same name also adds to its credibility. In real life, Solomon was a free man and was exceptionally well-educated. He also worked as a violinist and a carpenter. Almost everything that is shown in the movie matches what happened for real, and is more the reason to watch.

A Beautiful Mind

The movie A Beautiful Mind is based on the real life story of Nobel laureate John Nash, who developed paranoid schizophrenia. There are certain parts in the story that are not accurate adaptations of his real life, such as the accounts related to his second family. In real, John Nash was an American mathematician who became the only person to be awarded both the Nobel Memorial Prize as well as the Abel Prize. The movie that stars Russell Crowe is based on his real life and also on the biography that goes by the same name.

The Big Short

This movie had some really big names in its ensemble, including Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and more, and was based on the real events of the US housing bubble that led to the financial crisis in 2007 and affected more than half of the US states.

While the Oscars has seen many movies being nominated that are based on real life events, these 4 are the ones that are almost entirely true to what happened in real. If you have other favourites from the Oscar list that are inspired from real life events, do share the names here.
