De De Pyaar De Movie Review : An entertaining watch. Ajay Devgn At 50 Still Looks Like Snacc!

A fun take on relationships

The trailer of De De Pyaar De told us pretty much everything about the film. But even though the trailer reveals what the movie is all about, the film manages to hold the attention of the audience right from start to finish.

It's refreshing to see Ajay Devgn play his age in De De Pyaar De
It’s refreshing to see Ajay Devgn play his age in De De Pyaar De

The story is about a single, divorced businessman, Ashish Mehra (Ajay Devgn) who meets a woman, Aisha (Rakul Preet Singh) who is half his age, at a bachelor party. The two slowly become close and end up falling in love with each other. Ashish then decides to introduce Aisha to his estranged family, that consists of his ex-wife, Manju (Tabu), a son Ishaan (Bhavin Bhanushali)and daughter Ishika (Inayat Sood), his father (Alok Nath) and mother (Madhumati Kapoor).

It’s when they land up in India to meet the family, where all the twists and turns and the chaos begins. Till then it’s a breezy, sweet romance in London, between the two. While the romance is sweet and all mushy, it’s the twists and turns and chaos that adds all the zing to the film.

The film is said to be a romance comedy, but the film not only has humour, but romance and some emotional moments too. What is also beautiful is that the the age disparity between the 50 year old and 26 year old is slowly forgotten. What I also liked is the fact that the characters are shown as real as can be.For example when Manju breaks down and says she’s tired of handling everything and everyone all alone or Ashish admitting that he’s been a bad father and the expression of guilt he has on his face.

Ajay Devgn as Ashish in De De Pyaar has a tough time managing the two women in his life

It’s nice to see Ajay Devgn play his age and not try to be younger, wish more of our Bollywood stars would take cue from him, and do films that suit their age. It’s also nice to see him break out of his Singham image, and play a vulnerable and even a weak person to a certain point. But then he also proves that even at 50, he can give a lot of 20 somethings a run for their money! He looks like snacc!

Ajay Devgn and Tabu share a great onscreen chemistry

Tabu of course, like every film of hers, is fantastic in this one too. She overshadows the second half of the film. She’s graceful and has a great comic timing too. She plays the role of a mother, ex wife and daughter in law beautifully. My favorite scene is when she explains to the family about how Ajay alone isn’t to be blamed for their separation or moving out.

Rakul Preet has played her part as the chirpy 26 year old well. Like Tabu, Rakul has a good comic timing too. She plays the part of a jealous girlfriend who is trying to compete with the ex wife and also trying to fit in to the family very easily.

Rakul Preet Singh as Aisha in De De Pyaar De is very promising

The other characters, including Jimmy Shergill, Kumud Mishra, Javed Jaffrey etc. have played their parts well. The only actor who was a misfit is Inayat who plays Ajay’s daughter Ishita. She kind of gets carried away in her performance and is over the top.

Besides the age difference, topics like live-ins, divorce, second marriages etc. have been touched upon in a humorous way. De De Pyaar De is a fun watch. For all those who have a problem with the relationship shared by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Kareena Kapoor And Saif Ali Khan, Malaika Arora and Arjun Kapoor etc. this is a must watch film!
