Genius Movie Review: Presented Well But Dated

This one is not really a genius!

Director Anil Sharma’s Genius is about a young man who is an IIT genius and is on a mission for the Research and Analysis Wing of India (RAW). He is patriotic about his nation. He is an orphan, who has a brilliant mind and he hatches a plan to avenge the death of his team.

Genius aka Vasudev Shashtri is played by Anil Sharma’s son Utkarsh Sharma. Vasudev is super intelligent and can do almost anything from chanting mantras to chasing a speeding convoy on a bicycle. He is unbelievably capable of doing everything and he will go to any length to save his nation. While he has the best interests of his nation on one side, he has a romantic side to him too.

It’s like the entire weight of Genius lies on Utkarsh’s shoulders. It looks like director Anil Sharma wanted to show the world that Utkarsh was capable of doing everything but that’s exactly where he went wrong because the film becomes unbelievable and over the top.Utkarsh has a very romantic chocolate boy kind of a look and he doesn’t quite fit in as a RAW agent. Having said that for a debut film, Utkarsh is good but somehow he just doesn’t look his part in the film.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the villain is as usual good. Debutante actress Ishita Chauhan has a lot to learn and she needs to work on her expressions. Mithun Chakraborty as the National Security Advisor brings takes his character seriously and is sometimes over the top.

Visually, the film looks good and it has been presented well but it’s the script that is the culprit here. Watch Genius if you’re curious like me to know what the little boy Jeete from Gadar Ek Prem Katha(Utkarsh) looks like as a grown-up young actor!
