Now here’s a movie that is based on the making of another movie!
The Disaster Artist is a biographical comedy drama that chronicles Tommy Wiseau’s making of the 2003 movie The Room that has gone down in movie history as one of the worst movies that was ever made. It is mainly based on the non-fiction book by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell that is also titled The Disaster Artist. The Oscar nominated story, directed by James Franco, James Franco and Dave Franco play the role of Tommy and Greg respectively.
On December 1 2017, the movie was opened to a limited release, following which it opened worldwide on 8th December 2017.
The movie opens up to the year 1998 and shows a young Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero in their acting class. Tommy’s performance in one of the scenes from the movie A Streetcar Named Desire is being criticized by his teacher. It then moves on to show how Tommy writes a screenplay that he titles The Room and that delves upon a love triangle between him, his fiancée and his best friend. The movie also shows the many difficulties that his staff and crew members have while working with him.

Tommy is always late on the sets, regularly forgets his lines and does not provide his crew with basic necessities such as safe drinking water, even while one of his actor faints on the sets. He also humiliates one of the actresses about her acne, in front of the entire crew, just before she is about to shoot a sex scene.

The shoot is wrapped up, the movie complete, and finally audience get to watch it. The reactions are horror and then laughter at how horrible the movie is. Even as Tommy bursts into tears and is distraught, actor Greg Sestero comforts him, saying he has managed to delight the audience.

The European actor and film maker starred the 2003 movie The Room, which has widely been regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, and has hence gained a cult status. It is also said that this is not his real name, and the name ‘Wiseau’ is actually a corrupted form of the French word ‘oiseau’, which is used to describe a bird. Apparently, Tommy Wiseau used to sell novelty bird toys a long time ago when he was living in France, and hence he got the nickname ‘The Birdman’ and an extension as a name Wiseau.
Whether or not you’ve watched The Room, you definitely need to watch The Disaster Artist for its sheer genius of turning a crappy movie into an Oscar nominee.
