Sui Dhaaga takes you into the lives and world of people from a typical small town India. The film is about Mamta (Anushka Sharma) and Mauji (Varun Dhawan), a lovable young couple who aspire to do more and dream big in life. In real life, both Anushka and Varun are top Bollywood stars and also very impeccably dressed but as Mamta and Mauji, the two are at their de-glam best!

Mauji is a happy, jovial and lovable guy who does odd jobs here and there. While Mamta is a dutiful wife and daughter in law who takes good care of her in-laws. She is meek yet strong and represents most of the women from small towns. She is the one who is responsible for transforming her husband from a person who is pushed around by his employees to starting his own business.

You end up rooting for Mauji and Mamta in Sui Dhaaga

The film is a clean, sweet family entertainer, much like one of those Hallmark or Disney films where we know that it will be a happily ever after but still look forward to knowing what is going to happen next and are glued to the screen. You even end up rooting for Mauji and Mamta and hope things work for them!

Director Sharat Kataria brings the small town mentality and sentiments alive beautifully. He’s done a good job with the detailing as far as the setting, the cast etc are concerned. The hospital scenes where Mauji’s mother is admitted in the general ward looks so real. The tiny kitchen in Mauji’s house where Mamta and Mauji’s mother (Yamini Das) spend most of their time making tea and phulkas for their respected husbands is believable and real. Raghubir Yadav as Mauji’s father and Yamini Das as the mother are a perfect cast for the film.

Varun Dhawan is convincing as Mauji is a happy, jovial and lovable guy

Varun Dhawan has come a long way from his loverboy/ chocolate boy image and it’s good to see him fit into more realistic roles like this. He looks every bit the innocent, sweet, gentle, happy go lucky Mauji that he plays in the film. He’s given a brilliant performance in the film.

Anushka Sharma is the spine of Sui Dhaaga

Anushka Sharma is the spine of Sui Dhaaga as Mauji’s wife and otherwise too. She has got into the skin of a small town housewife. She has easily and convincingly moved out of her comfort zone to play this realistic character of Mamta. Both Varun and Anushka shine in the film.

Though the scenes where Mauji and Mamta along with their gang of people who are cash-starved households, take part in a Fashion show of that magnitude, with zero experience, might not be that convincing and illogical but the director has used what is called cinematic liberty to make this believable and engaging. And anyway who says that people with no money and from small towns can’t dream big?

What also works for the film is the performances by all the supporting actors like Namit Das, Sawan Tank etc. too. They make the film believable, realistic and relatable. The film is a simple story that has humor, warmth, and emotions and is wholesome and a complete family entertainer.

Sui Dhaaga is surely a dhaaga you should be pulling at! Go watch the film with your whole family.
