Why Ranbir Kapoor Deserves A Break From The Nepotism Debate

A person of substance

Ranbir Kapoor turns 35 today, and in a career that has recently been marred by some big flops, he is still in prime form. His films may be getting the silent treatment from the audience, but his performances in each of them are making critics run out of ways to praise his acting abilities.

The point being, Ranbir has time and again proved that he is one of the finest actors this country has produced, but this does not stop the flak coming his way due to all the recent nepotism hoopla. Now there’s nothing wrong with accusing the actor of having it easy in the industry due to his lineage, but people oftentimes make the mistake of placing him the league of talentless actors surviving in the industry due to their parentage.

And that’s where the problem lies. Ranbir Kapoor has has proven himself enough to be excluded from the nepotism debate. Let’s find out how.

For an actor of his calibre, the industry will advocate playing safe and only picking up bankable films in order to keep the career going strong. However, Ranbir is doing the exact opposite. He is sifting through scripts, and choosing the finest ones among them without giving much attention to other factors.

And this has been evident right from the start of his career when he chose to give up his heroic persona, and play an everyday salesman (Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year,) who faces the same problems a common man does. Later on, he made the choice of playing a deaf and dumb simpleton in Barfi!, a film that did wonders for his career, and at the same time proved those wrong who believed playing such a character will be a big blunder.

His risks haven’t always paid off, but he still looks in no mood of giving up on them. The massive debacle that Bombay Velvet was, didn’t stop Ranbir from producing another film, Jagga Jasoos, which too bombed at the box office despite being a well appreciated film.

As far as acting ability is concerned, Ranbir is among the top performers in Bollywood. Whether he is playing the role of dejected rock star, a stammering detective or a friend-zoned lover, he is on point when it comes to portraying the right emotions.

There has hardly been any performance of his which has not been applauded. The intensity which he brings to the table must be making the director’s job extremely easy. Time and again, with films like Tamasha, Wake Up Sid, Barfi!, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and more, he has proved his mettle to us all.

And it’s pretty evident from the choices he is making that he will keep doing so in the future as well, with the Sanjay Dutt biopic being his next big project. It’s hence a bit unfair to have Ranbir Kapoor’s mentioned in debates about actors who are surviving in the industry only because of nepotism.
