One of the most anticipated films of this year, Gully Boy is slated for a February 14 release. This means promotions, song releases and of course, the trailer release, are right around the corner. Announcing the date on which the trailer will be launched, the makers released a teaser video of sorts, called Asli Hip Hop, which has Ranveer Singh spitting killer rap. And it even shows a number of shots from the upcoming film.

Although it’s Ranveer mouthing the lines, they have been written by Spitfire, who has also composed the song. No instruments have been used, as the background is only provided by the beatboxing of D-Cypher and BeatRAW. This track is all about the power of real hip hop and how the lead character is out to show the world what it really is.

The song acts as sort of a preparation for what you’re about to get in the film. This is made awfully clear by the lines, “Gaur kar lo meri baaton pe tum dhyan do. Nainon ko main namm karoon, sukoon main deta kaan ko. Chillao zor se, uthao apne hath tum. Asli hip hop se milayein Hindustan ko.”

Other lines have also been brilliantly written by Spitfire. Here’s a highlight-worthy portion – “Lakh nafratein ho saath maa ka pyaar hai. Hansi hai uski jeet meri, kaise jaaun haar main? Kaat lo zuban, aasuon se gaaunga. Gaad do, beej hoon main, ped ban hi jaunga.”

Asli Hip Hop has really set the stage for what the music of Gully Boy will be like. It is said that big wigs like Naezy, Divine and others have written raps for this soundtrack. It is surely among the most awaited albums of this year, and we should get to hear it bit by bit following the trailer launch.

Gully Boy is a Zoya Akhtar directorial, which has been written by her with frequent collaborator Reema Kagti. The film chronicles the gully rap culture that has emerged in Mumbai over the past few years, and takes inspiration from the lives of Naezy and Divine. It stars Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Raaz and Amruta Subhash, apart from of course, Ranveer Singh.

Like we said, the trailer of Gully Boy will be dropped on 9 January, whereas the film is slated for a 14 February release across India.
