On July 2, which was his birthday, Parmish Verma released the music video of his latest song called Rondi. This new Punjabi track is currently trending on YouTube, and has grabbed more than 5 million views already, which means it can be declared a hit by the standards of the popular streaming site. But on the basis of the song’s merit itself, it’s an extremely mediocre one.

Rondi begins with a slow piano piece that sets the tone for the entire song. Parmish Verma’s vocals string in with the words “Ho rondi te honi. Pachhtaundi te honi. Ohnu jaagde saunde meri yaad staundi te honi.” For those unfamiliar with Punjabi, the lines loosely translate to, “She must be crying and lamenting. Thinking of me all the time.”

The rest of the song involves the same cry baby subject matter. The further lines go, “Pehla dil thaggeya. Phir zindagi thag gayi. Mainu kaale dil chon, thokar maar ke kadd gay.” These lyrics are the only thing that the song has that can reel your attention, which is why, the writer has focused on making them as emotional as possible, sometimes even messing with the rhymes to insert something pitiful.

To say that they have been badly written will be going overboard. After all, it’s a matter of choice for everyone. Those who’ve recently come out of a breakup will especially love lines like, “Kise hor di hoke, mere khwaab sajaundi te honi.” But despite this, the song still comes across as an attempt to garner an audience by inserting lyrics that get them all mushy, especially men.

These lyrics have been penned by Sunny Dubb, while the music for the song has been composed by M Vee. Parmish Verma’s voice doesn’t add much appeal to the track. The music video has been made using the typical Punjabi music video template. This means there are plenty of drone shots at picturesque foreign locations, plenty of shots of our hero showing off his sadness, and a swanky car… of course, how can you forget the car? There’s no footage reserved for the girl for whom the song is being sung, funnily enough.
