September 21 marks the release of much awaited Punjabi film Qismat which stars none other than the man who gave us the hit song of the same name, Ammy Virk. As part of the film’s promotions, its makers have released a new track called Fakira which has been sung by Gurnam Bhullar and composed by B Praak, who has composed other songs from the film.

Fakira is an intense song focusing on the sad love story that exists between the two lead characters from Qismat, played by Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta. It’s an emotional track that talks about separation. Calling his lover Fakira, the singer speaks how badly he his missing her.

The opening lines of Fakira have been beautifully written by lyricist Jaani. They go, “Teri yaad mainu tadpaave. Mainu te chain naa aave. Mainu jism ‘chon mere jaani. Tere jism di khushboo aave.” The chorus is also a testament to the piognant route that the song takes. The lines, “Oh fakira. Oh fakira. Mainu lai ja tu naal tere. Tere bina kaun puchhuga mainu. Mere sajna ve haal mere” really bring out the pain of the entire ordeal.

One thing that seems lacking here is the female perspective. The song could really have worked way better had the other perspective also been explored. That said, the singing performance by Gurnam Bhullar is excellent. His unadulterated voice gives the song its wings and perfectly inserts into it the grief that the lyrics denote. The composition by B Praak also deserves a lot of credit.

Ammy Virk’s hit song Qismat comes to mind each time we think about this film. This powerful number is well on its way to grabbing 150 million views on YouTube. The team responsible for this track is also the team behind Fakira. So you have B Praak giving the music, while Jaani has done the lyrics. And the video stars Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta as well.

Qismat the film has been directed by Jagdeep Sidhu, who is making his direction debut after having worked as screenwriter for a few Punjabi flicks. Apart from the two leads, the film also stars Guggu Gill, Tania, Hardeep Gill and Harby Sangha.

Qismat is out in theatres right now.
