Secret Superstar’s Music Review: Has Amit Trivedi’s Magic Worked This Time?

The promotions of Secret Superstar are on in full swing, even as the movie gears up for its much anticipated October 19 release. What would otherwise have been a small film has received a big boost due to the fact that Aamir Khan is in it, not only as an actor but also as a producer. The superstar’s quirky avatar for the film had us grinning with laughter the first time we saw him.

The music for Secret Superstar is out now with 5 tracks, all composed by Amit Trivedi who has been a bit out of form lately. Debutant Meghna Mishra has sung four out of the five songs, with the fifth one having been rendered by Kushal Chokshi. The lyrics have been penned by Kausar Munir.

The Secret Superstar soundtrack begins with ‘Main Kaun Hoon’ which starts off with soft guitar strums, and transitions into drum-heavy rock music. Meghna Mishra’s voice adapts to this transition without any hitch. The lyrics of ‘Main Kaun Hoon’ highlight the anguish of a young girl who is confused about her identity, which in a sense is the theme of the film.

‘Meri Pyaari Ammi,’ takes the cake as the best song from the album. But it’s primarily due to the superb lyrics which have been written for it. Words like ‘thodi si cool hai, thodi si purani bhi’ are a perfect tribute to Indian mothers. The song gets quite emotional as well, with lines like ‘Mushkil mein hoti hun, ammi meri roti hai. Khushi mein meri woh, dupatta bhigoti hai.’ It’s a well composed song with nice guitar riffs and an impressive vocal performance from Meghna.

‘Sapne Re’ is a pleasing track, but the composition sounds a bit generic. The lyrics sort of seem to have been forced into the music. But yet again, Meghna does a brilliant job with the singing. The only track which has not been sung by her is I’ll Miss You, a love song about teenage romance. It’s a sweet, melodic number which is sure to bring a smile to your face. Kushal Chokshi has given it all the innocence that the song demanded.

Meghna Mishra’s peak performance can be experienced in ‘Nachdi Phira’ which is song that’ll most likely give you goosebumps. Amit Trivedi has tried to convey a sense of achievement through this number, and he has succeeded in doing so.

The music of Secret Superstar has its heart at the right place. The songs may not become chartbusters, but they will sure help the film in conveying its message.
