A well-made song with questionable content

There are several problems with the way Punjabi music videos are being churned out lately. These songs seem to be following a set pattern and are choosing tried and tested subject matter with their lyrics and overall nature. This wouldn’t have been that big a concern, had the reach of these songs not been so massive in the Northern parts of the country.

Sidhu Moose Wala’s new song Dollar was released just two days ago and has gone on to reach 2 million views on YouTube already. From the upcoming movie Dakuaan Da Munda, this track straight-up looks to exalt the gangster life. This sense is prevalent in the way the music video has been created as well.

But one could argue that the song should be looked at objectively since it’s being made for a film. However, the antics showcased in the video will certainly make you stop thinking that way. Impressionable people looking at such videos is a dangerous sign, but that’s the way it goes.

Let us bring the focus back to the song itself. Because, by all means, Dollar is a pretty well-composed track. It’s got a spectacular, energetic hook and high-octane singing by Sidhu Moose Wala. Byg Byrd has been credited as the music director of this track, while the lyrics have been penned by Moose Wala himself.

Dollar is from the upcoming Punjabi film, Dakuan Da Munda. This flick is based on a book of the same name, written by Mintu Gurusaria, an ex-drug addict who redeemed himself later on in life. The story is also based on his own life and showcases the troubles he went through during his struggle with drug abuse.

This film has been directed by Mandeep Benipal, who is known for being the man behind movies like Sadda Haq, Yoddha and Ekam – Son of Soil. It stars Dev Kharoud, Pooja Verma, Jagjeet Sandhu, Lucky Dhaliwal, Hardeep Gill, Sukhdeep Sukh, Anita Meet and Kuljinder Sidhu.

Dakuan Da Munda is scheduled to be released on August 10.
