Soorma is no doubt one of the most anticipated films right now, not just for its sports movie premise, but also for the pairing of Diljit Dosanjh and Tapsee Pannu who have their own loyal fan bases. Its album, which has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, is fast turning out to be quite an interesting listening experience, with its latest song being Good Man Di Laaltain.

That’s quite an awkward title for a song, but not if you’re a Punjabi. Good Man Di Laaltain is an expression used pretty frequently in the language. There are basically two theories of its origin. One is that it refers to a lantern sold by a company called Good Man. And the other involves a short story about a blind man walking around in a forest with a lantern in his hand. When asked why he needs a lantern despite being blind, he says, “The lantern is for others to see in darkness.” This makes it a good man’s lantern.

Whatever the meaning, its reference in the Soorma will only be clear once the film releases in theatres. The song looks to create a dance-provoking atmosphere with its music. Despite being set in what looks like a Punjabi wedding function, it does not make heavy use of bhangra beats.

But that doesn’t mean that there’s no Punjabi flavour in the mix. The voice of Sukhwinder Singh gives the song its spunk. His vocals slither through the song’s highs and lows without much effort. And he is accompanied by none other than Sunidhi Chauhan in this song. Her portions sound a bit muffled for some reason, but there’s no doubt that her vocal performance is top-notch.

The lyrics for Good Man Di Laaltain have been penned by the great Gulzar. The pairing of Gulzar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has created magic a number of times in the past, and this time seems no different. The song is written entirely in Punjabi, and is an extension of the above-mentioned legend of Good Man Di Laaltain.

Apart from Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi can also be seen shaking a leg in this song’s video. Soorma is a biographical sports drama film based on the life of Sandeep Singh who suffered from a major accident during his career, yet managed to bounce back, and enter the Indian team again.

Directed by Shaad Ali, Soorma will be released on July 13 in India.
