The Kaala Doreya Song From Kaalakaandi Mixes Punjabi Folk With Hip-Hop

A fusion worth remembering

Kaalakaandi promises to be the most offbeat film amidst today’s Bollywood template. Starring Saif Ali Khan, it’s a film directed by the writer of Delhi Belly. So we know exactly what to expect from it, and the trailer for the film has shown us glimpses of that already.

Among the other promotional material is the song Kaala Doreya which has been created for a particular wedding sequence in the film. Fittingly then, it’s based on a popular Punjabi folk song that’s sung during weddings.

But sure enough, it’s a passé to lift songs as they are these days. In a bid to add a touch of their own, the makers have paired the song with hip-hop beats that surprisingly go very well with the tune. At the same time, a touch of traditional bhangra music is also to be found in this one.

Neha Bhasin has handled the singing duties on Kaala Doreya. It’s a song that suits her voice, but there’s really no real challenge involved for her in this one. The song also features a cameo from England-based rap artist Raxstar. His rap complements the track in a very harmonious manner.

The video of this track is particularly interesting. Saif Ali Khan can be seen tripping on a psychedelic drug. His freakish avatar in this film is noticeable more than ever here, even as he can be seen brandishing a gun while dancing along with guests at a party.

Kaalakaandi is set for a January 12 release date, but judging by the trailer, the film is all set to have a clash with our very own ‘sanskari’ censor board soon. Let us see how that pans out.
