26th of January, 1950, was a very important day in the history of India. It was on this day, 70 years ago, that India finally put in force its own constitution. So, it is only natural that we observe huge celebrations to honor this day.

New Delhi – The Grandest Of All

We have all witnessed the iconic Republic Day parade held at Rajpath on Doordarshan. The parade that begins at Rashtrapati Bhavan, down Rajpath and passes India Gate is one of the biggest events in the country. The parade comprises of nine to twelve different regiments of the Indian Army along with the Navy, and Air Force with their bands marching past in their uniforms and official decorations. The President hosts the National flag as the National Anthem is played and a 21-gun salute is given. Important awards are also given away by the President at this event. India’s Republic Day Parade in New Delhi is regarded as the most impressive and magnificent regular parade in the world.

The second most impressive parade demonstrating India’s ‘military might’ can be observed in Kolkata, West Bengal. The historic Red Road in front of Fort William in Kolkata’s Maidan witnesses a grand military parade. The parade comprises of several contingents of the army along with display of weapons, military bands etc.

Republic Day in Chennai is celebrated with great energy and zest at the Marina Beach and Kamaraj Salai. While the ceremonial parade is held at Marina Beach, the flag hoisting takes place near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The parade includes contingents of the armed forces, paramilitary personnel, state police personnel, and various school bands. There are cultural performances by various schools as well.
