Deep inside the Spiti valley, where the Pin river flows like a silver ribbon against a barren landscape, a tiny hamlet perches on the side of the valley. Almost hidden by the sparse pink blossoms of Sia Mentok, Mudh is a Spitian village with less than 200 people and only 30 houses.

Only a few travel writers and adrenaline high bikers make their way here. The other travellers don’t even know about this well-kept secret. They come till Kaza and return back. The more frequent visitors here are the snow leopards that sometimes prowl around the village at night.

But if you climb to 12,361 feet above sea level to reach Mudh, you will get a 360-degree view of the Trans-Himalayas.

The 30 odd mud houses in Mudh are painted white with red windows, which is the typical style for Spitian homes. Each house has Buddhist prayer flags on roofs, depicting the influence of Buddhism in this tiny hamlet.

Many of the young villagers have turned to tourism, and undertake guided treks from Mudh into the surrounding Pin-Parvati area. The landscape may look barren, but every turn will bring you to a great Himalayan panorama.

The village is so alienated from civilisation that there is no electricity and cell phone range here. So, if you are looking to escape the daily reality, this is a great destination to cleanse your soul and mind. The serene walks along the Pin river and the hikes into the barren wilderness can rejuvenate any tired soul.

The cuisine compromises of what the locals eat. There is plenty of accommodation, as most homes offer a stay at very economical prices.

Even if Mudh receives very few travellers, it has good facilities for food and lodging

You can reach Mudh by taking a cab or local transport bus from Kaza, which is 50 km away. The best time to visit is from May to September. But if you can brave the chilled winters, you might see a snow leopard walking the surrounding fields in broad daylight.

So, if you want an amazing experience, away from civilisation, plan a trip to Mudh, Spiti’s best-kept secret.
