Visit this tribal land to explore the Odia hinterland

Jeypore is situated at the junction of the three states of Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, and thus it boasts an amazing blend of traditions, cultures, cuisines and languages. Nestled amidst the hills of Eastern Ghats and Araku valley, Jeypore is a bustling commercial town. But this is the base for visiting the elusive Bonda tribals, who maintain their native way of life and customs.

The tribals are known to wear garbs of nature, and reside in the remote hills of Koraput. Besides distinctive tribal culture, Jeypore and its lush green environs comprise picturesque waterfalls, dams, rivulets veiled under the Sal forest and endless paddy fields.

As its Odisha, colorful temples are strewn around the town. City of Jeypore is also dotted with some picturesque lakes and gardens. You must also try the local fried delicacy called ‘bada’ sold by many wayside stalls and vendors.

You can also time your visit for the Thursday Haat (Market) at Onkadelli, which is a colorful event to peer into otherwise highly protective life style of Bonda tribes those reside in these hills. It is a great opportunity for photographers to capture the essence of the vibrant life of these rare tribals. Tribes also continue the practise of barter at these haats.
