Those who travel with a deep wanderlust, travel light. Their souls are too packed with adventures, to pack their bags heavy. So, if you have been bitten bad by the travel bug, pick your bag, and hit the road. But do not forget the essential items in your bags.

Trekking requires a whole lot more endurance than a regular trip. It requires higher level of fitness, preparation, motivation and stamina. It also means that those extra accessories and fancy wear will have to be shed from your bag. The space in your bag will be dedicated to the necessary and relevant. It means it has to include these essentials on priority.

Nutrition

From energy bars, to biscuits to chikki to glucose drinks, every trekker must carry extra nutrition. You never can gauge the exact length of your trek. Mountains can create illusions about your stamina, and never underestimate their might to lengthen distances. Peanuts and chana are good for stamina. Keeping yourself hydrated is also very important.

Navigation

Whether it be your traditional maps, compass or the modern GPS, a navigation tool is the must to not lose your way in a trek. You can also carry prints from recommended maps.Because this can cost you precious time and energy, and be the doom of your trip.

Night gear

Illumination and night goggles are a must if you plan to wander in the wild. Do not rely on cell phone torches, because they may ditch you if you do not get a chance to recharge your cell battery. Carry conventional torches. Avoid candles and matchboxes in wooded forests. Night gear may also include warm clothes, depending on your location and time of the year.

First aid supplies

This is the basic in every traveller’s bag. A few band aids, adhesive tape, antiseptic cream, pain killer and antibiotic are a must if you are going to be away from regular habitation. Insect repellents and sunscreen are also essential utilities. Most professional trek leaders also carry anti-venom vials JIC.

Emergency shelter

Sleeping bags or even simple sheets are a must. You must be prepared for emergence halts, and know how to pitch a tent anywhere. Sleeping bags are good because they are light to carry, and easy to use. Carry extra pair of clothes, towel and socks.

Signalling device

Communication device or PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) are also important. This is rarely used, but it is important if you get lost. These are one-off incidence, but they do happen. Better to be prepared than sorry.

Your mind

The most important essential for any trekker is to be aware of what is happening around you. The weather, animal and bird calls, the signals from co-trekkers and such other signs are important to pick up and understand in the wild. Stay away from edges and be extra careful while taking selfies. It is beautiful out there, but you have to be prepared to be surprised.
