Tucked on the mountains in Uttarakhand, near the idyllic village of Sankri, three friends started an art house. And now it is a dream land for any one who loves the mountains.

Every village in the mountains has a beautiful soul, which sings to you when you hike through the mountain side. And this soul has an artistic side in the village of Sankri. It is the base village for trekkers heading to Har-ki-Dun and Kedarnath treks. Located 200 kms from Dehradun, it takes about 8 hours of rough riding to reach this mesmerising village.

It is in this remote village that Deepak Bisht, Sandeep Bisht and Bhupendra Kunwar have set up an art house. They used to conduct treks in the region for the last 6 years, and recently they decided to set up an art house in the base village to support the culture of trekking and tourism in the region.

Sandeep Bisht spoke to HotFridayTalks about their endeavours towards connecting travellers with the local community. Meraki is a Greek word which means to do something from your soul, leaving a piece of yourself in your work. And the Meraki Triangle strives to do this for the travelling artists.

They take their residents to the village, where they interact with the locals. Many villagers have had to move out for their daily bread, and the art house tries to create a community where the villagers can create sustainable livelihood for themselves.

For the travellers they try to provide comfortable hospitality at the remotest of the locations with a taste of art and culture. Sandeep says, “Last year in November, we invited artists to interact with the villagers and travellers. We hope to do the same this year at our upcoming art house in Chopta valley. Meanwhile we are trying to work closely with the villagers at Sankri, where there are about 30 to 50 wooden houses. We take the travellers to meet and interact with the villagers.”

The Meraki Triangle is located 500 metres from the Sankri bus stop. You can visit it through out the year. The nearest airport and railway station is at Dehradun.

So, evoke the artist in you and head to the mountains for a great experience in Sankri.
