Many of us dream of bike riding in the Himalayas. And it remains on the bucket list of many. But here’s how you can actually plan this trip, even if you have a week. To breathe in the crisp mountain air, with the breeze combing through your hair, and cleanse the tired city soul.

You can plan on the following lines, and ride through the mountains in a circuit from Manali to Leh and back in seven days, discounting for the days it takes to reach Manali.

Here’s how you can ride from Manali to Leh in seven days.

Day 1 – Manali To Sarchu

You can leave from Manali early morning for Sarchu. As you have to cross the crowded pass at Rohtang, it is better to leave on time if you want to enjoy the dusk at Sarchu. There is often a traffic snarl at Gulaba Checkpoint in Rohtang. After this, you will pass beautiful spots like Khoksar, Sissu, Jispa, Deepak Tal, Suraj Tal and Barlacha La before arriving at Sarchu.

Distance: 230 kms, approx. 9 hours.

Day 2 – Sarchu To Leh

This requires you to cover three high passes at Nakee La, Lachung La and Taglang La. Along with the stunning bends and passes, you will also come across plains and bugyals on this route. You can visit Thiksey Monastery and Shey Palace while entering Leh.

Distance: 260 km, approx. 10 hours.

You can spend the day visiting various monasteries and other scenic sites in Leh, like Leh Palace & Tsemo Castle, Hall of Fame, Sindhu Ghaat, Sangam, Zorawar Fort, Pathar Sahib.

Day 4 – Leh To Hunder

It is better not to tire yourself on Day 3, as this route passes through some of strenuous patches of this circuit. You will pass through Khardungla pass, world’s highest motorable pass. You can visit Diskit Monastery, Diskit Buddha and try the double humped camel rides in the sand dunes of Nubra Valley. The route will also compel you to stop on some of the most scenic panoramas.

Distance: 140 kms, approx. 7 hours.

Day 5 – Hunder To Pangong

It is better to leave early on this day, to arrive at Pangong Tso lake in daylight hours. You can take the route via Shyok, as this is picturesque ride.

Distance: 190 kms, approx. 9 hours.

Day 6 – Pangong To Sarchu

You can return to Sarchu via the Chang La Pass. At Kharu, you come across the Manali Leh highway. There are many tents at Sarchu, to spend the night before heading back to Manali on Day 7.

Distance: 230 kms, approx. 9 hours.

These circuit passes through some of the most beautiful passes, that combine an adrenaline rush with serene landscapes.
